In recent years, you may have heard a thing or two about antioxidants. In fact, there are a lot of people who are on the antioxidant kick, so to speak, because they believe that this is the end-all be-all of the health world. In other words, all you have to do is buy foods or beverages with a lot of antioxidants in it, and you’ll automatically be healthier. Well, it is not that easy. Antioxidants can be found in a variety of foods and beverages.
For example, perhaps one of the most popular examples right now is green tea. People are going crazy over green tea because supposedly green tea contains a plethora of antioxidants that are good for your body and blood stream. Antioxidants are important because they serve as a type of defense mechanism for your body. Antioxidants in your body work doubly hard to fight off infections as well as prevent infections from ever starting. Think of it like having a little military inside of your body that is working for you 24 hours a day; seven days a week. However, while antioxidants are great for you, like too much of any good thing, they can work against you if you consume too much.
You may have heard a lot of talk recently about the antioxidants and the importance of vitamins and foods that contain them. But what exactly are antioxidants? Why are they so important? And how can taking them improve your health? When your body begins to break down food the chemical process can create free radicals in the body. This can also occur due to exposure to dangerous environmental influences such as radiation and tobacco. The damage done to your body by the presence of free radicals can lead to various types of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and other serious health problems. Antioxidants serve as a type of defense force against free radicals, working through the body to collect the free radicals that were created by the oxidation process in your body and to repair the damage that they have caused.

What are antioxidants? It is important to know what they are and their function before discussing antioxidants in skin care. Antioxidants are essential in ridding the body of free radicals. Free radicals are atoms with unpaired electron. They attack healthy cells and cause skin damage and premature aging. There is a lot of mentioning of antioxidants on television. Most typically they are in commercials about vitamins or nutritional supplements. Antioxidants can also be applied topically in the forms of creams or serums as well as taken orally. The benefits of skin care projects in general will help to keep your skin youthful, reduce wrinkles and lines, and help the skin to retain its moisture. It can reduce signs of aging. Skin care products are best researched well beforehand before making a purchase. Some may contain known carcinogens and other unhealthy ingredients that can harm your skin. Two components of skin is collagen and Elastin. Collagen is a fibrous protein with a lot of tensile strength. It keeps the skin firm among other things. Elastin is a protein as well and helps to keep your skin flexible. Elastin helps stretched skin go back to its original condition. When either or both of these break down you will see lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin. It’s no surprise that antioxidants are all the rage nowadays, and for good reason. An antioxidant is defined as “a substance in food that significantly decreases the adverse effects of reactive species, such as reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, on normal physiological function in humans.”In plain English, an antioxidant defends the body against harmful free radicals!Because of the mass appeal for antioxidants, many companies have marketed various ready-to-drink juices as being “the best source” of antioxidants that money can buy. It is therefore of great interest to the general public to know the antioxidant capacity of the beverages that they consume.Just how antioxidant-rich are these juices? And how do they compare with fresh-pressed juices?
To help answer this question, a recent study published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry compared the antioxidant status of 12 brand name ready-to-drink juices. However, it should be cautioned that because of the inherent complexity of food matrices, the use of a single antioxidant capacity method (used in many other studies) to determine antioxidant potency is ineffective. This is because antioxidants respond to different reactive species in different tests, which is partially attributed to multiple reaction mechanisms and reaction phases.

We know that antioxidants fight the oxidative damage done to our body cells by free radicals. This is all very scientific. Not being a scientist, I can not go into great detail to explain how our bodies come to have free radicals. I can tell you that in most cases they are not good for our bodies. You may understand this as an example, smoking causes free radicals in our bodies. We know that smoking can lead to lung cancer and heart disease. (in the case of smoking, just say no to smoking)To protect ourselves it is a good idea to find something that can fight the free radicals in our bodies. Enter antioxidants, they can prevent free radical damage and even sometimes reverse damage done by them. Some researchers have found that drinking green tea may help reverse some, but definitely not all damage done by smoking.
