The year was 1978 in New York City when I had my first sip of the new Euro-chic fad Perrier, a green glass bottle of mineral water. It was the healthy beverage of choice for urban dwellers seen at nearly every café that started the bottle water trend, which later evolved into a multi-billion dollar industry. How did we go from decades of drinking tap water supplied by our municipal water systems to drinking from a metal water bottle? Our culture was manipulated by questionable studies sited that people were getting sick from tap water. The fact is that municipal water falls under the purview of the Environmental Protection Agency, and is regularly inspected for bacteria and toxic chemicals. With that said, can you explicitly put your faith in a government run agency that runs the water that runs out of your faucet?
It has been a long road that led to other companies selling today’s water in plastic bottles. In the 1980’s, it started by targeting the fashionably health-conscious and tapping into the emerging fitness craze with bottled mountain spring water that then took a foothold in mainstream America. At the time, it did not occur to consumers that the plastic bottle was possibly toxic. Furthermore, we trusted that the water source matched the pictures on the label of pure lake water, evergreen trees and refreshing streams. That trust soon faded when reports emerged that spring water was in fact municipal tap water reverse-osmosis-filtered by corporate bottling factories. Bottled water companies are under the regulatory authority of the FDA. The reality is about 70% of bottled water does not cross state lines for sale, making it exempt from FDA oversight.
