Vitamin C is among one of the most effective nutrients that our body can use. It buoys up the immune system and helps in preventing cardiovascular diseases and eye problems. But this vitamin cannot be stored in the body so that you have to feed the body the required dose regularly. Because of the numerous health benefits of vitamin C, it is important that people get the daily quota.
How does the body benefit?
Collagen is a fibrous protein that supports body tissues of bone, cartilage, ligaments, blood vessels etc., and it is vitamin C that produces this necessary protein in the body. Other benefits of vitamin C are its role in keeping the skin well toned and wrinkle free and also in producing dentin, the calcified tissue that is one of the teeth components. As it buoys up the immunity system, vitamin C also aids in faster healing of wounds. Benefits of vitamin C also include the production of histamines, which are amines involved in immune responses. Controlling blood pressure and thereby reducing the risk of cardiovascular problems are also among the benefits. It can produce nitric oxide, which is a chemical compound that can relax blood vessels. It is this property that makes it preventive of cardiovascular problems and stroke.
Antioxidant benefits of vitamin C
Free radicals are byproducts resulting from the oxidation of cells and are a type of oxygen atom that can affect the body cells negatively. Antioxidants are natural agents that prevent and nullify the action of free radicals. Among the more important benefits of vitamin C is its antioxidant property. Because of its functionality as an antioxidant, vitamin C can also strengthen the immune system and thus prevents common ailments like cold, cough, flu, and other minor infections. This adds one more to the list of the benefits of vitamin C. And studies are being conducted to decide the efficacy of vitamin C in preventing cancer and major eye problems like macular degeneration.

Do you know that you should feed your children yoghurt while taking antibiotics? We have all taken our children to the pediatrician and left with a prescription for antibiotics after being told that there is a bacterial infection of some sort, whether it is an ear infection; strep throat, which is a throat infection caused by Streptococcus bacteria; or a case of dysentery. Unfortunately, these types of infections hit children the hardest. Although antibiotics get rid of these pesky germs, antibiotics can cause side effects such as diarrhoea and yeast (fungal) infections. Fortunately, yoghurt contains probiotics, which may help to maintain a healthy balance of bacteria in our bodies and avoid bacterial imbalances during a course of antibiotics. “Antibiotics wipe out good bacteria, not just the bad”
What is the role of good bacteria in our bodies?
-Provide a source of Vitamin K and B-complex vitamins.
-Help digest food.
-Create an unfavorable environment for harmful bacteria and yeast.
-Promote regular bowel movements.
What happens when antibiotics attack our good bacteria?
Antibiotics do not differentiate between the good and bad bacteria, killing both. Good bacteria live in the intestines and oral cavity, serving many useful purposes. Eliminating beneficial bacteria in the gut and mouth can lead to problems such as diarrhoea, oral yeast infections and diaper rash in non-potty trained kids. The favourable bacteria keep the yeast levels in check by maintaining the proper natural balance of yeast in our bodies. So when the good bacteria are fewer in number, this creates an environment which allows more room for the yeast to feel “at home” and the yeast begins to multiply. Therefore, you might end up with a child who has recovered from a bacterial infection, but is now suffering from diarrhea; a white tongue, which is a sign of an oral yeast infection; and a red beefy rash on his bottom due to leaching of yeast from the intestines into the stool.
-What are probiotics?
Probiotics are live bacteria that can be ingested in the form of dietary supplements and foodstuffs, providing a host of healthful benefits. They are referred to as “good bacteria”. Probiotics typically contain Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli, which are two different species of beneficial bacteria naturally found in our bodies.

People afflicted with a sweet tooth are often victims of uncontrolled sugar intake. Candy, cake, cookies and ice cream are everywhere and it seems that some people just can’t go without having these treats every day. It’s not bad to treat oneself to these sweet concoctions once in a while but indulging on them daily is clearly unhealthy. On the other hand, eating those treats that are sweetened by artificial sweeteners is not a wise alternative.
Basically, a craving for sugar is one of the signals the body sends to indicate that it is in need of energy. To stop sugar cravings healthily, one just has to nibble on protein-rich foods every other hour or so. Increasing the amount of protein consumed actually decreases the body’s cravings for sweets. Protein snacks are a better source of energy than the sugary ones. Excellent and handy sources for protein are nuts like peanuts, walnuts, and almonds. What’s great is that you can put these in your bag and just reach for a few pieces to pop in your mouth whenever sugar cravings kick in. Beans are also an excellent source of protein. Stock up and cook some of these protein-rich beans: black beans, black-eyed peas, garbanzos, kidney beans, lima beans, and navy beans. Aside from keeping you away from too much sugar, beans are also low in fat, have no cholesterol, and high in iron, magnesium and potassium.

We all know that soda is bad for us, but a new study reveals that its effects may be worse than previously thought. Researchers in Singapore have found a link between soda consumption and pancreatic cancer. Participants in the study who drank two or more per week were found to be at higher risk of developing pancreatic cancer, which is one of the deadliest forms This news comes as no surprise to health advocates, who have noted the effects of these high-sugar beverages on the body for many years. With more than 60,000 participants, the new study found an 87 percent higher risk of developing pancreatic cancer among those who consumed soft drinks frequently but not among those who drank fruit juice instead. Researchers theorized that the high sugar content found in soda raises the body’s insulin levels, which can lead to the growth of cancer cells in the pancreas. Another possible explanation could result from the difference between the natural sugars found in fruit juices compared to the added sugar (and sometimes sugar substitutes) found in carbonated sodas However, researchers also noted a link between drinking soda and engaging in other unhealthy behaviors, such as eating red meat and smoking. Consumption of red meat has been linked to pancreatic cancer in previous studies. Thus, the connection between soda and pancreatic cancer remains somewhat unclear.

The dentist has told us for years that excess sugar is bad for our teeth. But it now appears that too much sugar may have the capability to shorten our lifespan as well. This is critical research, especially for Americans, who are watching the incidence of type 2 diabetes skyrocket. Diabetes is a disease in which the body is unable to convert sugar in the blood to energy. Since the sugar in the blood is not effectively utilized, the levels of sugar increase. The individual may experience increased thirst, increased hunger, and/or weight gain as warning signals of diabetes.Even without diabetic complications, though, a new study indicates that simply reducing the levels of dietary sugars could hold the key to improved longevity. High levels of blood sugar will naturally reach our cells. An earlier study on worms who were subjected to high levels of sugar showed that they died off much earlier than worms that ate a more natural, low-sugar diet. Now a new study has shown that by preventing the sugar from entering the cells in the first place, the worms’ life spans can be prolonged by up to 20 percent. The reason worms were used in these studies is because they process sugar into and out of their cells via the same method as humans.Mitochondria within our cells are the primary agents that turn sugar into energy. The faster these mitochondria operate the more energy they produce and the faster they help clear free radicals from the bodies. An overload of sugar in cells slows down – or stops – the mitochondrial action, allowing destructive free radicals free reign in our bodies. However, the study also demonstrated that after a period of lower-sugar intake (during which the mitochondria became more efficient) they were still able to eliminate sugar and free radicals more effectively than those mitochondria that had never enjoyed the lower-sugar period.

Is aspartame good or bad? Pretty straightforward question in my inbox this morning. Well, aspartame is absolutely appalling! Many people I have known at least say the same thing. You could type it into a search engine and read all the scary information. All artificial sweeteners contain wood alcohol and other chemicals. My friend’s daughter always a had fairly time with her menstruation; but in the past year it began to be terrible. Finally she bled for 6 weeks without stopping and had terrible cramps and miseries. She told her to quit aspartame totally. The daughter did and it all went away. She is back to normal for her. My own experience with aspartame has been one of illness. I can’t touch the stuff. I get migraines if I even chew gum with aspartame in it. I realize that the FDA has approved it, and that it is a billion dollar industry. It makes me wonder, however, how interested the FDA truly is in the public well being, when it approves such poison for our consumption, and blatantly refuses to acknowledge such sweeteners as Stevia which is an herb that has been used for centuries, that which even diabetics can use safely.

For centuries, people have enhanced their foods with various flavorings, preservatives, and dyes. But some ingredients on today’s food labels can be downright scary. Few foods reach today’s supermarkets free of additives – substances that do not occur naturally in a food but are added for various reasons. These include preservatives to prevent spoilage; emulsifiers to prevent water and fat from separating; thickeners; vitamins and minerals (either to replace nutrients lost in processing or to increase nutritional value); sweeteners (both natural and artificial), salt, flavorings to improve taste; and dyes to make everything from candies to soft drinks more visually appealing. In all, North American food processors may use any of about 2,800 additives. Although many people question the safety of these additives, the fact is that their use is governed by stringent regulations. Authorities require extensive studies before an additive is allowed on the market. In spite of this, rare reactions to certain additives are possible. The appropriate use of additives, though, allows us to enjoy history’s safest and most abundant assortment of foods.
Some 10,000 substances make their way into food during growing, processing, and packaging; some of these accidental additives can pose more of a health threat than preservatives and other direct additives. Some foods, for example, contain traces of pesticides sprayed on crops or applied to the soil. Environmental pollutants in foods, such as PCBs, mercury, and lead, are harmful when ingested in large quantities. Sometimes allergic reactions that are blamed on foods or intentional additives are actually triggered by an unintended one. For example, a person who has never had a food allergy may inexplicably develop a rash after drinking milk. The resulting small amounts of penicillin in the milk would not be harmful for most people, only to those who are allergic to the drug.

While it is true that there is no substitute for experience, the Golden Rule of medicine is that nothing can be considered standard until clinical studies have been performed and repeated. This is especially true when it comes to alternative medicine or traditional Chinese medicine, because opponents of these medicinal practices argue that there is no clinical evidence to support the fact that millions of individuals around the world have been successfully using traditional forms of medicine for thousands of years. And something that should be taken into account is the anecdotal evidence spread out over several thousand years. This should be considered equally as important as clinical studies.
In any case, a recent alternative theory arising out of the University of Turku in Finland is showing yet another reason to take the super product known as probiotics. Long considered one of the most healthy types of live microorganisms living in the body, inhibiting pathogens and toxins produced in bacteria as well as improving the balance of intestinal flora, probiotics have been touted as one of those wonder elements that every individual should take, and the most recent study from Finland is showing that probiotics can actually help pregnant women lose belly fat more quickly after giving birth than women who do not take probiotics.
The cases specifically looked at 256 expectant women and found that the women who took probiotics during the first trimester of pregnancy had reduced body fat a year after giving birth in comparison to the women who did not take probiotics. They were divided into three groups, with the first group receiving dietary counseling, low-fat foods, and probiotics. The second group received counseling, food, as well as a placebo, and the third group received only the placebo. 12 months after giving birth, all the women were measured for waist circumference and level of body fat, and what the research showed was the women who took probiotics had a 25% central obesity rate in comparison to the women who did not take probiotics, who had a 43% central obesity rate. The pure placebo group had 40%.

In the past years, the benefits of green tea have been well publicized: when it comes to health, green tea has gotten all the credit as other teas sit on the sidelines, steaming with jealously. While this press may have been warranted – green tea has been proven to be beneficial to your wellness – it is certainly not the only tea worth sipping. White, for instance, is just as good for you and, in some instances, may even be more beneficial than its green counterpart. White, in addition to being good for your health, may also be good for your taste buds; it is grown and preserved in a manner that causes it to lose the grassy taste many green teas possess. For this reason, many health seekers find it, quite literally, easier to swallow.
White tea is actually a sub-category of green tea, one of many. These types of teas are among the least fermented of teas, thus reaping the most benefits for your mind and body. White teas are also among the highest in antioxidants, making them ideal for fighting free radicals. But, white teas don’t stop there: they can help in everyday health matters as well. According to a 2004 study at Pace University, white was proven to have a higher concentration of anti-viral and anti-bacterial traits than green. According to this study, white tea may help prevent strep, staph infections, pneumonias, and dental problems. When compared to green, white has higher levels of catechin, and Gallic acid. The latter possesses anti-fungal and anti-viral properties. White tea also contains a lot of theobromine, the same alkaloid found in chocolate. This specific alkaloid is helpful when dealing with edema and circulatory problems.
