Recycling Plastic

by YoliFan

Although plastics came into our lives in the 1950’s, the safe use of plastics was then in question. It was not until the 1960’s that plastics became a part of our every day living and it was a great thing. It was used in everything from cups to auto parts. But it soon became a strain on our environment. Plastic is not biodegradable so how to dispose of it was a problem.A program for recycling plastic has been started and it has a code that marks disposable and recyclable plastic containers. We have all become familiar with the three arrows that make up a triangle. These codes are generally found on various plastics and within the triangle, there is usually a number. These numbers tell the grade of recycling your plastic container falls into.

The plastics coded as No.1 are the common consumer product plastics such as water bottles, soda bottles, pill containers and other such containers. When these plastics have been recycled, they become fiberfill which is used in sleeping backs, winter coats, and car bumpers to name a few items. These plastics can be made into combs, cassette tapes, furniture and more plastic bottles. The No. 2 spot is for the high density plastics such as laundry detergent, bleach, and motor oil containers. This are used to make toys, laminate flooring, and rope and the plastic is accepted at the recycling facilities as is No. 1.The plastics in the Nos. 3, 4, and 5 spots are the least able to be recycled. These are plastics such as: grocery and sandwich bags, medical tubing, shower curtains, plastic pipes and more followed by plastic bowls and dishes, grocery and sandwich bags and others of this ilk.

Pollution Caused by Plastic Bottles

by YoliFan

In the late 1970s, bottled water was introduced in the market and was widely accepted by many consumers. Then, in year 2000 bottled water companies bloomed and had caused a strain in the natural environment due to the production of 1.5 million tons of plastic bottle per year which causes pollution worldwide. According to statistics, bottled water causes pollution because tons of crude oil is being used to produce bottled waters. An environmentalist once said that is takes 17 million of oil barrels to make 1.5 million plastic containers which is actually enough to fuel 1 million cars, also it would take 2.7 million tons of plastic are needed to make plastic containers each year. Though the governments have supported the recycling of this plastic bottle, data shows that from 53% recycling of bottled water in 1993 it decreases to 12% of the total plastic bottle in the year of 2003. For the environmentalists’ view, the continuous decrease of recycled plastic bottles were becoming very alarming and one solution that they cam up to solve this problem is the formation of a national law that would enable the government to come with a plan on how to give incentives for those who would help the government in recycling plastic ware especially plastic bottles.

Probiotics

by YoliFan

Probiotics are friendly bacteria that promote health in the body. The intestinal tract is lined with over 500 different species of bacteria that can produce helpful or harmful effects on overall health. Most people do not realize the importance of the digestive tract beyond the absorption of nutrients and serving as a tube to remove waste. The digestive tract plays a vital role in overall health acting as a first line of defense against ingested microorganisms. In fact, the intestinal immune system is one of the most important components of our overall immune system. The balance between healthy and harmful bacteria is essential to overall health and is easily thrown off by stress, toxins, poor diet, carbonated beverages, contaminated food and antibiotics to name just a few.

Healthy bacteria or good microflora serve a protective barrier against harmful bacteria, contribute to the production of antimicrobial organisms and help to strengthen the immune system. Imagine your intestinal tract like a parking lot. If all of the spaces are filled with healthy bacteria “probiotics” than unhealthy bacteria are unable to park. This prevents the unhealthy bacteria from damaging the intestinal lining, causing infections or leading to other symptoms like gas, bloating, diarrhea and abdominal cramping/pain. Maintaining a balanced internal intestinal environment of healthy microflora is essential to maintaining overall good health. Unfortunately, as described above, to many of us are under stress, exposed to antibiotics through our food or from prescriptions, or have a poor diet that ends up disrupting these healthy bacteria.

Some of the specific benefits of probiotics include:
Decreasing side effects of antibiotics like diarrhea and yeast infections, control urinary tract infections, improve lactose digestion for lactose sensitive or intolerant individuals, control harmful bacteria and boost immune response, prevent formation of harmful bacteria that can lead to colon cancer, relieves constipation, allergies, atopic skin conditions, IBS and Crohn’s symptoms, and helps to reduce blood cholesterol to name just a few.

Energy Drink Side Effects

by YoliFan

Energy drink is so popular these days that it can be found almost everywhere. Energy drink is consumed by millions of people each month. This is great for manufacturers but is bad for people’s health. Most consumers don’t drink energy drink on regular basis but there are some consumers who do. The consumers who drink it on regular basis will eventually feel its negative side effects. In the short-run, most energy drinks don’t cause major health problems. In the long-run, they can lead to serious chronic diseases. Side effects can range from: insomnia, headaches, stomachaches, tremors, dehydration, blood sugar spikes, energy crashes, and increase of heart and breathing rate. From studying energy drinks, I would say over ninety-eight percent of them are not healthy to drink. To make matters worst, most brands of them have sugar-free versions. The sugar-free versions are worst than the regular ones because they contained artificial sweetener. The most common artificial sweetener found in energy drink is sucralose. Energy drink usually contained cheap synthetic vitamins and minerals, and synthetic chemicals. It also contained a lot of energy blends, such as taurine, herbs and caffeine. The herbs shouldn’t cause major health problems but some herbs can have strange side effects when mixed with other chemicals. The ingredients in energy drink that I’m most concerned about are: synthetic vitamins and minerals, refined sugar and sucralose.

Synthetic vitamins and minerals:
The vitamins and minerals found in most energy drinks are cheaply made and synthetic. The main purpose for this is to increase profit. Certain synthetic vitamins and minerals are more stable than their natural version, which is why beverage manufacturers like to use them in their products. Energy drink usually contained a lot of water-soluble vitamins, such as B-vitamins and vitamin C. Water-soluble vitamins dissolve quickly in liquid; therefore, it is useless to add them in beverages. For this reason, when you consume energy drink you are basically consuming a drink that is full of empty calories.

Are Energy Drinks Bad For You?

by YoliFan

Are energy drinks bad for you? And if so, how do we spot the signs that energy drinks are bad? First we need to figure out why energy drinks are bad and then find out how to spot the classic signs that you might be suffering from the harmful side effects of energy drinks.Let’s start with a short anecdote. You may have heard the story about the young high school football player who died of a heart attack in the middle of a game. Such a horrible shame. The significance? Apparently he had consumed several cans of a popular brand of energy drink before the game…

So what can we learn from this? Well, if nothing else, it prompts us to investigate whether or not we really should be consuming this stuff in the mass quantities that we are. We need to understand the key ingredients and how to tell if any harmful side effects are manifesting in us.Most of the famous energy drink brands are being slammed for their dependence on two main ingredients. The first, of course, is caffeine. The second, not surprisingly, is sugar. These sound pretty harmless. So what’s the big deal? Well, with sugar, it’s easy. Our generation is already suffering from skyrocketing rates of diabetes and the mountains of sugar dumped into our energy drinks isn’t exactly going to help. But you already knew that.

What about the caffeine?

All around the world, people have been drinking coffee and tea for eons. Why the sudden fear? Here’s the thing. The average American drinks the equivalent of around three cups of coffee a day. And generally speaking, he lives to see his next cup. So how about that football player? He must have had a bad heart to begin with right? The problem is that there are significant differences between a cup of coffee and a can of energy drink. The first is that a lot of the popular energy drinks that are marketed towards teens and young people contain more than twice the amount of caffeine in a typical cup of coffee. The second is that while your average Joe sips his cup of joe over a newspaper, your average rock star chugs his can of Rockstar over two more cans of Rockstar.
