In recent years, you may have heard a thing or two about antioxidants. In fact, there are a lot of people who are on the antioxidant kick, so to speak, because they believe that this is the end-all be-all of the health world. In other words, all you have to do is buy foods or beverages with a lot of antioxidants in it, and you’ll automatically be healthier. Well, it is not that easy. Antioxidants can be found in a variety of foods and beverages.
For example, perhaps one of the most popular examples right now is green tea. People are going crazy over green tea because supposedly green tea contains a plethora of antioxidants that are good for your body and blood stream. Antioxidants are important because they serve as a type of defense mechanism for your body. Antioxidants in your body work doubly hard to fight off infections as well as prevent infections from ever starting. Think of it like having a little military inside of your body that is working for you 24 hours a day; seven days a week. However, while antioxidants are great for you, like too much of any good thing, they can work against you if you consume too much.
You may have heard a lot of talk recently about the antioxidants and the importance of vitamins and foods that contain them. But what exactly are antioxidants? Why are they so important? And how can taking them improve your health? When your body begins to break down food the chemical process can create free radicals in the body. This can also occur due to exposure to dangerous environmental influences such as radiation and tobacco. The damage done to your body by the presence of free radicals can lead to various types of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and other serious health problems. Antioxidants serve as a type of defense force against free radicals, working through the body to collect the free radicals that were created by the oxidation process in your body and to repair the damage that they have caused.

BPA has been getting a lot of press lately and parents are confused and concerned about what to do. If you find yourself in that situation, here are some simple facts that might clear it up to teach you how to avoid BPA and keep your baby safe.BPA is short for a chemical called Bisphenol A. Researchers have discovered that BPA is a hormone disrupter and they have linked it to breast cancer, prostrate cancer and infertility. It is the chemical that manufacturers use in the plastic lining of food cans and certain plastic bottles. Therefore, we generally come in contact with BPA through our food. To keep your baby away from Bisphenol A, avoid metal cans like those used for pasta, tuna or soup. Try ‘canned’ foods in glass containers instead. When it comes to plastic bottles choose the ones that are labeled “No BPA.” When using plastic containers of any other sort, stick with those whose recycling numbers in the triangle on the bottom are #1, #2, or #4. Don’t heat your food in plastic. The heat will cause the toxic chemical to leach into your food. Plastic wrap will also leach Bisphenol A if used in the microwave. And, to add insult to injury, don’t wash your plastic things in the dishwasher since the heat in the dishwasher will cause the plastic to breakdown.

The World Health Organization defines probiotics as live micro-organisms that confer a health benefit on the host, when administered in adequate amounts.Probiotics are basically microorganism such as bacteria, viruses and yeast that are similar to beneficial microorganisms found in the human gut.Mostly probiotics consist of bacteria, hence the moniker ‘friendly bacteria’ or ‘good bacteria’. These friendly bacteria are vital to proper development of the immune system, to protection against the harmful microorganisms that cause disease. Probiotics can be found in natural foods as well as supplements.
The Need for Probiotics
Our bodies are host to both good and bad microorganisms numbering in the trillions, but this is a delicate balance. This balance is crucial for our health but is too often disturbed due to our poor habits and modern medicine. One reason is that ‘unfriendly’ microorganisms such as: disease-causing bacteria, yeasts, fungi, and parasites increase and upset the balance. These microorganisms flourish due to lack of hygiene and massive amounts of junk foods that we consume. The other reason is because of antibiotics, these antibiotics are definitely useful – but repeated use of antibiotics kills the friendly bacteria, subsequently disrupting the balance.

As a new mother having a baby can completely transform your life. This beautiful and amazing tiny person needs you day and night to teach, love and to provide for on a constant basis. Whether you have chosen to breastfeed or introduce infant formula into your baby’s diet choosing the safest brand of bottles is very important. We all know that breast is always best when it comes to baby’s health, but when you are a mom on the go you may consider the option of pumping and storing your breast milk for those times when you are already running late for that doctors or dentist appointment or you simply just need to give your sore breasts a break. A lot of experts will say if you switch from breast to bottle and back to breast your baby will experience what they refer to as “nipple confusion”. This is when baby decides he or she prefers the bottle over the breast and will refuse to latch onto the breast. You can prevent this from happening if you decide to use a bottle with a nipple that is most similar to a woman”s nipple. You want to consider the shape and feel of your own breast as you shop around for a brand of bottle. You will also want to take into the consideration the size of the nipple hole and how fast the flow is. The type of nipple you choose should depend on your own milk production and how hard your baby has to suck to get a good flow. If your baby is sucking fairly hard and has to work for the milk then you will want to choose a slow release nipple. This way baby still has to put in the effort to receive the milk and will be less likely to overeat which could result in nipple confusion. Of course you want the best for your child. You want to be absolutely sure that the bottles and other baby accessories are safe and will not harm him or her in any way. When choosing a brand of bottle be sure to double check that the label on the bottle packaging clearly states that the product is FDA approved, and BPA free. BPA stands for Bisphenol A, which is a building block of plastic that can be hazardous to humans. Many retailers still have products containing BPA on their shelves so be extra careful and do not assume that a product is BPA free unless it is clearly stated on the products label.

I have a drinking problem. You do too, friend. Liquid calories now account for a whopping 21 percent of the average American’s daily intake—more than 400 calories every single day, which is twice as much as we drank 30 years ago and about 40 pounds a year that we have to figure out how to work off, or live with. These statistics are good news for the beverage industry, which is always looking for new, tasty ways to lure customers and increase profits. Unfortunately, these techniques include covering our bottles with misleading information and filling them with chemicals that often wreak havoc on our bodies.
In David Zinczenko’s new book Drink This, Not That!, he aimed his nutritional magnifying glass at the beverage industry, and found dozens of products we wouldn’t want filling out our bodies—not anymore, at least.
