Babies up to 4 months are usually fed only on breast milk. Mother’s milk is very important at this age. As the child grows, we feed them with other milk, juices, soups, etc. To feed milk and juices, we use baby bottles. The early feeding bottles were made of glass and at that time, there were no health hazards. But these bottles break easily. Then the plastic bottle trend began. It won’t break easily and it was convenient for mothers to carry the bottles easily while going out with their babies.
However, at a later stage, researchers found out that plastic feeding bottles contain a harmful chemical called Bisphenol A or BPA, which is often used to make plastics “shatterproof”. This chemical is currently under investigation by the food and drug administration because there is reason to believe that it can interfere with a child’s development if he or she is constantly exposed to the chemical. Studies show that the chemical BPA may:
-Affect the nervous system of babies.
-Some children may become hyperactive.
-The female child may attain puberty at an early age.
This became a huge concern for parents. After all, a child’s health is the most important thing for all parents. An alternative solution is what every parent needed.

-Introduction to BPA
So what is BPA anyway? BPA is the common abbreviation for Bisphenol A which is a dysfunctional building block of several important polymers and polymer additives. BPA is also used as a key monomer in production of polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins. Polycarbonate plastic is used in a large variety of products including water bottles and baby bottles. Epoxy resins are used in the lining of the majority of food and beverage cans including but not limited to beer cans, soup cans, baby food cans, vegetable cans and soda cans. Clearly, BPA is a part of many products used in everyday life.
-Why the controversy surrounding BPA?
So now that we know what BPA is, why do some people say Bisphenol A should be avoided? According to testing on rats it has been shown that BPA can act as an endocrine disruptor which mimics the rats own hormones and can lead to adverse biological effects. Some of these biological effects have included developmental toxicity, carcinogenic effects, and possible neurotoxicity. Although no tests on humans have taken place a recent study by the Yale School of Medicine demonstrated that adverse neurological effects occur in non-human primates regularly exposed to Bisphenol A at levels equal the EPA’s maximum safe dose of 50 µg/kg/day. So while no evidence exists that BPA is harmful to humans there is a concern that long term low dose exposure to Bisphenol A may induce chronic toxicity in humans.

So what’s all this talk about unsafe water bottles? You may have caught wind of some of the controversy surrounding polycarbonate plastic water bottles and the chemicals used in their manufacture. You may have heard the term “BPA” or “Bisphenol-A,” but educating yourself about this harmful chemical and choosing safe water bottles probably seemed like a chore, not the way you want to spend a Monday night or Saturday afternoon.
BPA was first discovered in 1891, and manufacturers have used this monomer for at least fifty years. It is a key ingredient used in the epoxy resins that go into making the nearly shatter-proof polycarbonate plastic water bottles, which have become so popular with fitness and outdoors enthusiasts. Even though BPA has long been suspected of having adverse effects on the human body-since the 1930s!-concerns over its use in many common household products didn’t make a splash in mainstream media until 2008. If you’ve had that bottle for more than a couple of years, it probably contains BPA, and more disturbing is the thought that most baby bottles more than a couple years old do too. Factors like regular exposure to heat can cause the plastic to degrade at a faster rate and speed up the release of BPA into water and other stored liquids. Simply put, feeding infants with plastic formula bottles exposes them to BPA’s harmful effects. But, before you panic, keep in mind that the six top manufacturers of baby bottles in the U.S. have all pledged to stop using BPA. Safe water bottles and safe formula bottles are now widely available. The chemical has low toxicity, meaning that it’s not going to hurt you overnight, yet keep in mind that repeated ingestion of Bisphenol-A can develop into chronic toxicity over the long-term, mimicking human hormones like estrogen and potentially causing prostate, testicular, and breast cancer.
