Aspartame

by YoliFan

Is aspartame good or bad? Pretty straightforward question in my inbox this morning. Well, aspartame is absolutely appalling! Many people I have known at least say the same thing. You could type it into a search engine and read all the scary information. All artificial sweeteners contain wood alcohol and other chemicals. My friend’s daughter always a had fairly time with her menstruation; but in the past year it began to be terrible. Finally she bled for 6 weeks without stopping and had terrible cramps and miseries. She told her to quit aspartame totally. The daughter did and it all went away. She is back to normal for her. My own experience with aspartame has been one of illness. I can’t touch the stuff. I get migraines if I even chew gum with aspartame in it. I realize that the FDA has approved it, and that it is a billion dollar industry. It makes me wonder, however, how interested the FDA truly is in the public well being, when it approves such poison for our consumption, and blatantly refuses to acknowledge such sweeteners as Stevia which is an herb that has been used for centuries, that which even diabetics can use safely.

BPA in Plastics

by YoliFan

You may have heard about the potential harmful effects of Bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical commonly used in some plastic containers and the linings of some canned foods.BPA is a chemical produced in large quantities primarily for use in the manufacture of polycarbonate plastics. They are typically clear and hard, and used in certain food and beverage packaging such as water and infant bottles. In 2007, the CDC published results that BPA had been detected in the urine of nearly 93% of those tested, a finding indicating widespread exposure to BPA in the U.S. population. BPA has been linked to a variety of health problems. Here are a few simple suggestions to help you reduce your BPA exposure:
-Avoid Reusable Polycarbonate (labeled #7) plastic water and baby bottles which tend to be hard and clear. Choose polyethylene or unlined aluminum bottles instead. Today, many companies have bottles for purchase that will specifically say BPA Free. This will also cut down on the millions of plastic bottles polluting our earth.
-Avoid Polycarbonate Plastic Food Containers and Tableware. Better choice are usually the BPA-free plastics with the recycling labels #1, #2, or #4 and #5. I was amazed at how many childrens food containers (plates, cups, etc) that we had to get rid of when I went through our cupboards. I recommend you do the same.

Sweeteners

by YoliFan

There is a tendency for things in health to be made far more complicated than they need to be. Coupled with this is the tendency to look for answers in just about every place but the one where it lies. Rather than ask which sweeteners to use (there is a “battle” raging about which one is best) ask should I use sweeteners at all? Two reports published fairly recently focused on the issues surrounding sweeteners in food. There has been much debate over the role of high fructose corn syrup in the development of obesity and diabetes. A study at University of California showed that consuming beverages with high fructose syrup increased the levels of LDL or bad cholesterol in the blood stream more than those sweetened with glucose thus linking it to an increase in risk of heart disease. The study was small and preliminary. It seems that it is the amount of fructose, which is the key. Hence eating fruit, which contains fructose, is not a problem. This is because it is not concentrated, is surrounded by fiber and we do not consume huge amounts at a time. The form which we find in processed foods is a problem as it is concentrated, usually has no fiber around it and we eat more of it. This is even more of an issue if consumed often. There have also been some questions raised about Stevia the relatively new artificial sweetener derived from a South American shrub. Whilst it is “natural” as against aspartame and saccharin, it is still processed before being used. The FDA has declared it “generally recognized as safe.” There is some argument as to whether it is linked to cancer or not. This is, surprisingly, beside the point. The issue with any sweetener artificial or “natural” is that it can lead to obesity. The body associates sweetness with energy in the form of calories. When they do not arrive you remain hungry. This is particularly the case with low calorie sweet drinks. Sweet taste with no calories will make people hungry and hence they eat. Sweeteners may also affect our natural gut “good” bacteria.

Safe Water Bottles

by YoliFan

Any of us that are at all concerned about the state of the environment should consider the purchase of an eco friendly water bottle to carry around. We need to move away fro the use of prepackaged water as the main source of our supply. By using prepackaged water as our exclusive source of H2O, we are not only killing the planet, but we are also possibly killing ourselves. Did you know that in the U.S. alone, over 60,000,000 plastic bottles are manufactured, transported, and disposed of every single day? It is estimated by some, that it takes more than a thousand years for a bottle to degrade once it is deposited at the landfill. Do you even realize what the chemicals from these plastics are doing to our groundwater system? An eco friendly water bottle, which we would never need to dispose of and that contained no chemical agents whatsoever, would be ideal. We need to stop the flow of these bottles into our landfills. The reason that we started drinking prepackaged water was due to the fact that we thought that it was safer than tap, and now we know that isn’t true. The truth is that your bottled water does not come from a pure mountain spring like the advertisers tell you it does. In most cases it is water straight out of the tap, filtered only for chlorine and odor. 60-70% of the bottled water that is sold is exempt from the FDA’s bottled water standards, simply because it was bottled and sold within the same state. City tap water must meet more stringent standards than most people think, but bottled water has no prohibition on E-Coli, Cryptosporidium, or Giardia. There are also allowable limits for phthalates and Bromine, both of which are cancer causing agents. Knowing a little more about what is likely in your water makes an eco friendly water bottle sound more attractive, doesn’t it? What you fill this bottle with is extremely important. That is why you must purchase and install a home water purification system in your home, which is designed to defend against all of the chemicals, microbes, and toxic metals that are in your water. You simply can’t trust water that has been purified by anyone other than yourself. The best eco friendly water bottle that you can possibly get is one that is made from durable stainless steel and has a chemical free liner. This will keep you safe from phthalates, and BPE, and will last you for years. Help the environment and yourself by following the guidance that you have been given here today, and you will enjoy better health and a more pleasant planet tomorrow.

Fructose Corn Syrup

by YoliFan

High fructose corn syrup, also known as HFCS is rapidly replacing cane and beet sugar in foods such as soft drinks, yogurt, fruit juices, jams, jellies and beer because it is cheap and easy to transport. So the odds are, even if you have never heard of it, you will have eaten it! The process by which HFCS is produced was first developed in 1957 and later refined between 1965 and 1975. From approximately 1975 to 1985 the use of HFCS was widespread in the US… mostly found in processed foods and soft drinks. In the past 25 years consumption of HFCS has skyrocketed by 1000%. At the same time, there is a growing prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes. HFCS is composed of two simple sugars, glucose and fructose. Glucose and fructose are combined in fruits to form the sugar sucrose. Sucrose contains equal amounts of each. HFCS may contain equal amounts, but it can be manipulated to contain more fructose than glucose. Glucose is the sugar that is measured when blood sugar levels are obtained. Glucose stimulates the production of the hormone leptin, which turns off your appetite, and insulin which helps your body use glucose.
Unlike glucose, fructose does not stimulate the release of leptin or insulin. In one study, reported from the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine, drinking fructose-sweetened beverages for 10 weeks was associated with increased belly fat. Drinking the same amount of glucose-sweetened beverages was not! The people in the fructose group were also seen to have low sensitivity to insulin. Insulin insensitivity, or insulin resistance, is the hallmark of type 2 diabetes. A study at the University of California at Davis reported the blood triglycerides (fat) levels were higher in volunteers after they consumed sucrose, fructose, or HFCS… than after consuming glucose. Being metabolized in your liver and easily turned to fat there, fructose can also contribute to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Although fruit contains fructose, fruit also contains fiber which interferes with sugar’s absorption. Fruit also contains vitamins and minerals not included in HFCS. Although it comes from corn, HFCS does not have the fiber that makes corn healthy to eat in moderation.
