Effects of Additives

Food additives can have harmful affects on one’s health when consumed on a regular basis. In the late 1950s, a law was passed identified as the Delaney Clause that has forced companies to keep from putting chemicals into different food products which are fully understood to be harmful to humans. While the latter law is indeed a positive move, there are still additives and preservatives put in food that have been linked with the onset of certain diseases, disorders, and health related issues. It is imperative that consumers review the ingredients in the foods that one consumes. The labels offer information about the vitamins, nutrients, and other additives and preservatives that have been used to process the food and to keep it fresh. Ingredient labels let consumers know precisely what they are consuming, provided that the consumer reviews the labels with great care. It is also important for the consumer to consider the fact that labels suggesting that that foods are absent of preservatives and additives are not necessarily 100 percent truthful. It is helpful for consumers to know what kinds of chemicals they are looking for if they want to limit their consumption of additives and preservatives. Common additives and preservatives include things like Sodium Nitrate, Sodium Nitrite, Butylated hydroxyanisole, butylated hydrozyttoluene, Aspartame, Propyl Gallate, Monosodium Glutamate, Trans Fats, Acesulfame-K, Food Colorings, Olestra, Potassium Bromate, White Sugar, and Sodium Chloride. Sodium Nitrate/Nitrite has been associated with the development of certain cancers, just as butylated hydrozyttoluene, Butylated hydroxyanisole, Aspartame, Acesulfame-K, Food Colorings, and Propyl Gallate have also been associated with the development of certain cancers. Foods like hot dogs, deli meats, potato chips, certain cereals, and a variety of gums contain the latter preservatives and additives. Potassium Bromate has been associated with the development of cancers in a variety of animals. Aspartame is associated with a number of health risks. Aspartame is found in products known as artificial sweeteners. People that have used Aspartame that have had a bad reaction to the preservative have complained of a variety of health problems including headaches, vertigo, muscular issues, skin irritation, mood swings, fatigue, anxiety attacks, respiratory issues, sleep problems, tinnitus, and memory loss. More severe issues have also been reported by some individuals including epileptic seizers, birth defects, and the onset of fibromyalgia.

Artificial Sweeteners

People afflicted with a sweet tooth are often victims of uncontrolled sugar intake. Candy, cake, cookies and ice cream are everywhere and it seems that some people just can’t go without having these treats every day. It’s not bad to treat oneself to these sweet concoctions once in a while but indulging on them daily is clearly unhealthy. On the other hand, eating those treats that are sweetened by artificial sweeteners is not a wise alternative. Basically, a craving for sugar is one of the signals the body sends to indicate that it is in need of energy. To stop sugar cravings healthily, one just has to nibble on protein-rich foods every other hour or so. Increasing the amount of protein consumed actually decreases the body’s cravings for sweets. Protein snacks are a better source of energy than the sugary ones. Excellent and handy sources for protein are nuts like peanuts, walnuts, and almonds. What’s great is that you can put these in your bag and just reach for a few pieces to pop in your mouth whenever sugar cravings kick in. Beans are also an excellent source of protein. Stock up and cook some of these protein-rich beans: black beans, black-eyed peas, garbanzos, kidney beans, lima beans, and navy beans. Aside from keeping you away from too much sugar, beans are also low in fat, have no cholesterol, and high in iron, magnesium and potassium.

Plastic Problem

It seems like plastic is everywhere you look. From the cars we drive to the products we consume, from the pipes in our lawns to the brushes we use in our bathrooms. If plastic is everywhere how can it be so bad? Our oceans are the source of most of the earths oxygen and are an integral part of our global ecosystem. The waste we create from our plastic addiction is literally threatening our oceans. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is comprised of literally millions of points of trash – most of it plastic. In 2006 the United Nations Environment Program estimated that in each square mile of ocean you can find 46,000 pieces of floating plastic. It is literally the world’s largest landfill, and it is floating in the Pacific ocean. From Our Litter to Our Oceans How does the plastic bag you took home from the grocery store end up in the Pacific ocean? Up to 90% of the plastic found in our oceans sadly comes from urban runoff. A Growing Epidemic While more and more waste collects, more is being created. In the past 20 years plastic production has doubled and is still continuing to expand. With plastic products offering manufacturers a lifespan of 1,000 years unless consumers respond to this issue, it will only grow. The amount of plastic found in our oceans is having a profound effect on many different animals. Some biologists estimate that millions of birds and other marine species have simply died from starvation or some sort of poisoning after mistakenly ingesting plastic when looking for food. Our dwindling sea turtle population is at extreme risk. An Impossible Problem According to the United Nations Environment Program we are facing what some may consider an impossible problem, they state that in “some areas, big fragments can be collected, but it’s simply not possible to thoroughly clean a section of ocean that spans the area of a continent and extends 100 feet below the surface.” Our only real solution is managing our waste on land before it reaches our oceans.

Blood Pressure and Caffeine

The possible link between coffee and high blood pressure is a very hot topic. This is a controversial issue, seeing as how certain studies claim that coffee truly is one of the causes of high blood pressure, while other individuals believe the contrary. Research has yielded various results, which is most likely the main reason behind the controversy regarding this issue. Something that is well established is the fact that coffee contains a great amount of caffeine. In fact, coffee contains more caffeine than soda, chocolate and even tea. Caffeine is a powerful stimulant that does more harm than good. Caffeine causes an increase in blood pressure, heart palpitations and nervousness, in general. Studies have shown that when an individual consumes 2 to 3 cups of coffee, which would equal approximately 250 Milligrams per day, it does not seem to be too harmful. However, if one begins to take in more than 2 to 3 cups a day, you might be risking a drastic increase in your blood pressure. Your baseline BP is quite vital. For example, when dealing with the same amount of coffee, a person with a high BP value would most likely experience more of an increase than those with a normal BP. It is important to keep in mind that with caffeine, as well as other stimulants, a person may develop a tolerance. If such is the case, then one’s blood pressure might not be increased as drastically. Various studies show that caffeine alone is not the cause of high blood pressure. There are a plethora of other factors that come into play, such as family history, alcohol consumption, calorie intake, stress, smoking, your environment, exercise, your schooling and even sexual activity.
