Sugars are considered to be one of your body’s worst enemies, so why then are even so-called healthy alternatives such as artificial sweeteners finding their way onto the bad list as well? The following is an in-depth look at artificial sweeteners and the overall affect they have on your body.

Artificial sweeteners are just that: artificial. Instead of occurring from a natural resource, it is chemically made sweeteners that are designed to trick your body into thinking that it is eating something sweet when in actuality it is not. These came about as a way to strengthen the sweetening power of drinks without the use of normal sugars. They were touted as a way to still enjoy your favorite drinks without the added risk of ingesting calories. In reality however, artificial sweeteners proved to be just as harmful to the human body as regular sugars even when used in moderation.
Typically it is consist of three different chemical components: Saccharin, Sucralose, Acesulfame K, Stevia, Tagatose and Aspartame. Of those, the most common sweeteners Saccharin, Sucralose, and Acesulfame K are among the worst to ingest due to the potential problems associated with their use.
-Acesulfame K
Acesulfame K was approved for use in July 1988 by the FDS for safe use as an artificial sweetener; however, since then problems have risen over its harmful effects on the human body. In recent tests, the findings show that Acesulfame K stimulates insulin secretion in the body, prompting low blood sugar attacks.
-Sucralose
Sucralose, also commonly known as Splenda, is a chlorinated sucrose derivative. Unfortunately, sucralose has been linked to medical problems such as shrunken thymus glands and even enlarged kidneys and liver. This is due in part to the fact that sucralose is unable to break down into small enough amounts of sugar. As a result, the body is incapable of digesting it properly.

Today’s food products are typically chockfull of additives and preservatives: the latter additions are often used to keep the food fresh for longer periods of time. Some preservatives and additives are all natural while others are of synthetic varieties as well; some experts assert that the synthetic preservatives and additives are the most concerning in terms of health.A lot of products on the market, like veggies and fruits, have special synthetic preservatives added so that the fruits and veggies maintain their color an appearance; sulphites and sulpher dioxide are used to fend off browning and changes in the food’s appearance. The latter preservatives, after several studies, have been revealed to be potential causes for issues like asthma and Hyperactivity disorders. Another preservative that is related to asthmatic issues as well as issues related to hyperactivity is identified as Benzoic acid. Benzoic acid is used in different types of sauce. What’s more, this particular preservative can prove intensely irritating to the eyes and the skin.Butylated hydroxyanisole is another kind of preservative which is detrimental to one’s health when consumed. The latter preservative has been linked to the development of certain cancers and tumors. In addition, Butylated hydroxyanisole has also been associated with asthmatic related issues, problems with cholesterol balances, hyperactivity, and other disorders. This particular preservative is prohibited in certain regions in the world because of the dangers associated with its consumption.

Probiotics

And something that should be taken into account is the anecdotal evidence spread out over several thousand years. This should be considered equally as important as clinical studies. In any case, a recent alternative theory arising out of the University of Turku in Finland is showing yet another reason to take the super product known as probiotics. Long considered one of the most healthy types of live microorganisms living in the body, inhibiting pathogens and toxins produced in bacteria as well as improving the balance of intestinal flora, probiotics have been touted as one of those wonder elements that every individual should take, and the most recent study from Finland is showing that probiotics can actually help pregnant women lose belly fat more quickly after giving birth than women who do not take probiotics. The cases specifically looked at 256 expectant women and found that the women who took probiotics during the first trimester of pregnancy had reduced body fat a year after giving birth in comparison to the women who did not take probiotics. They were divided into three groups, with the first group receiving dietary counseling, low-fat foods, and probiotics. The second group received counseling, food, as well as a placebo, and the third group received only the placebo. 12 months after giving birth, all the women were measured for waist circumference and level of body fat, and what the research showed was the women who took probiotics had a 25% central obesity rate in comparison to the women who did not take probiotics, who had a 43% central obesity rate. The pure placebo group had 40%.

Although many people question the safety of these additives, the fact is that their use is governed by stringent regulations. Authorities require extensive studies before an additive is allowed on the market. In spite of this, rare reactions to certain additives are possible. The appropriate use of additives, though, allows us to enjoy history’s safest and most abundant assortment of foods.Some 10,000 substances make their way into food during growing, processing, and packaging; some of these accidental additives can pose more of a health threat than preservatives and other direct additives. Some foods, for example, contain traces of pesticides sprayed on crops or applied to the soil. Environmental pollutants in foods, such as PCBs, mercury, and lead, are harmful when ingested in large quantities.Sometimes allergic reactions that are blamed on foods or intentional additives are actually triggered by an unintended one. For example, a person who has never had a food allergy may inexplicably develop a rash after drinking milk. The resulting small amounts of penicillin in the milk would not be harmful for most people, only to those who are allergic to the drug.
