Caffeine

by YoliFan

Millions of people drink soda each day- diet or not. Those who drink non-diet sodas could be at risk- but exactly how unhealthy can caffeine become for one’s health?Caffeine is both artificially and naturally produced. It is a stimulant, so it has seen many uses in areas of work or study. While most of it is consumed in soda, you can find it in chocolate and pain relievers. At this point I can honestly say that I have found caffeine to be neither a stimulant nor addictive. I have been consuming it for many years in pretty large quantities. I can take it or leave it and, yes, I can sleep for hours after consuming it. It seems to make no difference. It should be noted, however, that caffeine is, in fact, addictive- and you can feel the effects of it for up to 6 hours (or so they say). This can include insomnia, a rather large drawback to the drug found in sodas. It not only dehydrates the body, but removes calcium from bones- a vital nutrient in child development. The maximum amount of caffeine you should consume a day should be no more than 100 milligrams- about two Mountain Dew sodas. It is recommended that if you drink more than this, you try to cut back. If you are sincerely addicted to caffeine-related products- it is recommended you take vitamins to help regain the nutrients you lose.

Corn Syrup Problems

by YoliFan

Fructose is a simple sugar that is found naturally in most fruits and vegetables. The amount of naturally occurring fructose found in whole foods is small, and because there is evidence showing that small amounts do not raise blood sugar levels significantly, it has long been considered a good sugar and a healthy substitute for refined sugar. Enter high fructose corn syrup. Since its introduction, the amount of HFCS consumed on a daily basis has skyrocketed, and with that, so has the fructose debate.

Ultimately, the debate boils down to a single simple question: Is fructose good for you? Because the main source in the modern diet now comes from corn syrup, this product tends to be at the center of most debates. High fructose corn syrup is a highly processed sugar that consists of both glucose and fructose. However, the amount of fructose in a single gram of corn syrup exceeds the amount found naturally in fresh fruits and vegetables.

For some, the issue is centered around processing. The argument is that because corn syrup does not exist in nature, it cannot be called a natural product, and therefore is not to be considered healthy. To support this argument, studies reveal that the process by which corn is turned into HFCS requires mercury. This process has led to trace amounts of mercury being found in HFCS, substantiating the claim that it is not a healthy sweetener. In addition, it is argued that high fructose consumption leads to high density belly fat which has been linked to many health and medical issues.

Vitamin C

by YoliFan

Vitamin C is among one of the most effective nutrients that our body can use. It buoys up the immune system and helps in preventing cardiovascular diseases and eye problems. But this vitamin cannot be stored in the body so that you have to feed the body the required dose regularly. Because of the numerous health benefits of vitamin C, it is important that people get the daily quota.

How does the body benefit?

Collagen is a fibrous protein that supports body tissues of bone, cartilage, ligaments, blood vessels etc., and it is vitamin C that produces this necessary protein in the body. Other benefits of vitamin C are its role in keeping the skin well toned and wrinkle free and also in producing dentin, the calcified tissue that is one of the teeth components. As it buoys up the immunity system, vitamin C also aids in faster healing of wounds. Benefits of vitamin C also include the production of histamines, which are amines involved in immune responses.

Controlling blood pressure and thereby reducing the risk of cardiovascular problems are also among the benefits. It can produce nitric oxide, which is a chemical compound that can relax blood vessels. It is this property that makes it preventive of cardiovascular problems and stroke.

Antioxidant benefits of vitamin C

Free radicals are byproducts resulting from the oxidation of cells and are a type of oxygen atom that can affect the body cells negatively. Antioxidants are natural agents that prevent and nullify the action of free radicals. Among the more important benefits of vitamin C is its antioxidant property.

Because of its functionality as an antioxidant, vitamin C can also strengthen the immune system and thus prevents common ailments like cold, cough, flu, and other minor infections. This adds one more to the list of the benefits of vitamin C. And studies are being conducted to decide the efficacy of vitamin C in preventing cancer and major eye problems like macular degeneration.

Corn Syrup and Sugar

by YoliFan

We always seem to compare and contrast things in life… it’s how your brain works. However, comparing and contrasting some different foods while determining what to eat, just doesn’t make sense. Here’s an example: when you read the labels of foods, is it better to select one that contains corn syrup or sugar? The answer is another question. Why are you even considering eating a food that is packaged? A packaged food is a processed food. All processed foods have no place in the diet of a person with diabetes if that person wants to reverse their type 2 diabetes. On the other hand, if a diabetic wants to cut his or her life short, then by all means, ask the question. High-fructose corn syrup was created in the 1970s and its use has skyrocketed to insane levels since 1980. It’s cheaper than sugar and easier to use in creating processed foods. High-fructose corn syrup is processed cornstarch. Enzymes convert it into a chemical syrup that generally simulates the composition of sugar. But that’s the key right there: it simulates the composition of sugar. Year after year, we learn the hard way the basic principle of nutrition… when you tamper with foods you create problems. High-fructose corn syrup isn’t cornstarch. It’s not sugar either. It’s a chemical mixture that has been highly processed.

The danger of regular sugar is that it replaces foods that provide the real nutrients your body needs. Sugar acidifies your system and results in using up calcium from your bones just to metabolize it. It eats up the B vitamins in your body as well, the same B vitamins that help you deal with stress, stay mentally grounded and prevent acid reflux and other digestive system upsets. The danger of consuming foods containing high-fructose corn syrup, is that it magnifies all of the above-mentioned effects from eating foods with sugar in them. Sugar is processed enough, but high-fructose corn syrup essentially is sugar on steroids… it’s processed that much. The damage done on a cellular level is magnified by its production of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) that lead to diabetic complications, heart disease, cancer, vision problems and other problems.
