Preservatives

by YoliFan

Today’s food products are typically chockfull of additives and preservatives: the latter additions are often used to keep the food fresh for longer periods of time. Yet, additives and preservatives are not necessarily healthy for the individuals that consume them on a regular basis. Additives are often put into processed foods in order to add specific nutrients, vitamins and minerals, or fend off food spoilage, or to improve upon the look, feel, smell, and taste of a particular food. Some additives are merely additional colorings and dyes which might not be very healthy for an individual to consume. Some additives will cause allergic reactions in people and if that is the case the additives should certainly be avoided at all costs. For instance, there are some people that are ultra sensitive to things like Monosodium Glutamate, while others can consume it without difficulty. Some preservatives and additives are all natural while others are of synthetic varieties as well; some experts assert that the synthetic preservatives and additives are the most concerning in terms of health. A lot of products on the market, like veggies and fruits, have special synthetic preservatives added so that the fruits and veggies maintain their color an appearance; sulphites and sulpher dioxide are used to fend off browning and changes in the food’s appearance. The latter preservatives, after several studies, have been revealed to be potential causes for issues like asthma and Hyperactivity disorders. Another preservative that is related to asthmatic issues as well as issues related to hyperactivity is identified as Benzoic acid. Benzoic acid is used in different types of sauce. What’s more, this particular preservative can prove intensely irritating to the eyes and the skin. Butylated hydroxyanisole is another kind of preservative which is detrimental to one’s health when consumed. The latter preservative has been linked to the development of certain cancers and tumors. In addition, Butylated hydroxyanisole has also been associated with asthmatic related issues, problems with cholesterol balances, hyperactivity, and other disorders. This particular preservative is prohibited in certain regions in the world because of the dangers associated with its consumption.

Plastic Water Bottle

by YoliFan

You may not know for 20 years if your plastic water bottle is poisoning you.Right now the FDA says only that it will keep monitoring data to see if the agency needs to take regulatory action. It could be 20 or 30 years before they truly know the effects on the human body from the toxins leached from plastic water bottles. For now no serious action is being taken regarding the very serious health hazards presented by plastic water bottles, plastic food storage containers, and more. Here’s why your plastic water bottle may be unsafe: Most bottled water comes in polyethylene terephthalate bottles, indicated by a number 1, PET, or PETE on the bottle’s bottom. While some scientists believe that these bottles are generally safe at room temperature, when they are stored at warm temperatures, the story changes. When the bottles are warmed, they begin to quickly leach chemicals into the water. It doesn’t matter if the bottles are still sealed, of it it’s the bottle you’re carrying with you and drinking from throughout the day. Scientists agree that the bottle left in the hot car all day is dangerous – but how warm is too warm? And how warm were those bottles during shipment? How warm were they when they sat in a warehouse prior to shipment? You have no way to know.According to Ken Smith, PhD and past chair of the American Chemical Society’s division of environmental chemistry, “Leaving bottled water out in the car changes the chemical equilibrium so that the materials from the plastic go into the water faster.”Note that he didn’t say heat causes chemicals to go into the water, but that it causes them to go into the water faster. That would indicate that even if your bottled water has been refrigerated from the day it was bottled, chemicals are leaching into it.

Too Much Caffeine

by YoliFan

Most of us have experienced caffeine symptoms at some point in time. These could range from insomnia to headaches, anxiety attacks and reduced alertness. Caffeine is meant to stimulate the central nervous system. When you drink anything containing caffeine, such as coffee or chocolate, the caffeine makes its way to the blood stream through the stomach and small intestine. In the first six hours, only about half the caffeine is eliminated from the body. The rest of the caffeine remains inside the body for a much longer time. Research shows that more than four cups of coffee a day lead to caffeine addiction. As a result, when regular coffee drinkers go without their shot of java or even a coke, they experience caffeine symptoms. These could range from headaches to plain in the muscles. Although there is no proof of caffeine being connected with cardiovascular disease, excessive intake of coffee has been linked to hypertension. Caffeine addiction comes in next after nicotine and alcohol addiction although the official lethal dose for caffeine is 80 cups of coffee in one sitting. Caffeine stimulates the cortex in your brain that increases your mental activity levels. This makes you temporarily alert and gives you a feeling of being awake and removes all traces of fatigue. However, this phenomenon lasts only for a short while. For those who already suffer from hypertension or anxiety attacks, this increased mental activity can have an extremely unpleasant effect. Heavy intake of caffeine reduces the duration of sleep as well as affects the quality. This is because the nervous system gets so charged up that it interferes with deep, restful sleep. Researchers have also linked osteoporosis in women with caffeine.

Free Radicals

by YoliFan

Humans don’t actually age, or get sick or get diseases, our cells do. In order for you to stay healthier, help prevent disease, you must provide your cells with the proper fuel and protection. Just like putting gas in our cars, that’s the right fuel to make things work at the optimal level. If you put apple juice in your cars gas tank, it may run for a short time, but it would eventually start to sputter, and die, same goes for your cells.A human cell is comprised of many atoms, and 2 electrons. When these healthy cells replicate themselves, they make an exact copy, this makes the body stay younger with minimal chance for disease and decay. Your body maintains and repairs itself through our millions of cells, from the inside out. Feed your cells the proper fuel for them to do this, and results will be obvious, if you don’t, the results will be even more obvious.Free radicals simply put are the atoms missing 1 electron, doesn’t seem that bad, but here’s what they do. Free radicals travel around and steal electrons from surrounding atoms, there by destroying them and turning them into free radicals. When these damaged cells replicate, they make a damaged copy of themselves, and this leads to our getting sick and disease, and aging more rapidly. Free radicals also destroy healthy cells, they kill them off, once it’s dead it’s gone.

Soda and Health

by YoliFan

We all know that soda is bad for us, but a new study reveals that its effects may be worse than previously thought. Researchers in Singapore have found a link between soda consumption and pancreatic cancer. Participants in the study who drank two or more per week were found to be at higher risk of developing pancreatic cancer, which is one of the deadliest forms This news comes as no surprise to health advocates, who have noted the effects of these high-sugar beverages on the body for many years. With more than 60,000 participants, the new study found an 87 percent higher risk of developing pancreatic cancer among those who consumed soft drinks frequently but not among those who drank fruit juice instead. Researchers theorized that the high sugar content found in soda raises the body’s insulin levels, which can lead to the growth of cancer cells in the pancreas. Another possible explanation could result from the difference between the natural sugars found in fruit juices compared to the added sugar (and sometimes sugar substitutes) found in carbonated sodas However, researchers also noted a link between drinking soda and engaging in other unhealthy behaviors, such as eating red meat and smoking. Consumption of red meat has been linked to pancreatic cancer in previous studies. Thus, the connection between soda and pancreatic cancer remains somewhat unclear.
