Antioxidants

by YoliFan

An antioxidant is a classification of organic substances, which includes vitamins A, C and E, selenium, and carotenoids. Carotenoids give many fruits and vegetables their color. Beta-carotene is one example of a carotenoid. Antioxidants are also known to be effective in helping to prevent heart disease, stroke and even cancer.Antioxidants work to deactivate free radicals, which roam the human body in the form of un-oxidized oxygen molecules or O2. Free radicals are the natural by-product of the processes happening within and among the various cells in the body. Environmental factors such as, tobacco smoke and radiation, also create free radicals. If free radicals are left to oxidize on their own, they can create carcinogens. The process can damage cell walls, cell structures and genetic material within the cells themselves. Damage to cells causes scar tissue and then the scar tissue either becomes benign or malignant (cancerous).Antioxidants deactivate free radicals before they get a chance to oxidize and do harm to the body. Despite numerous studies, it is still unknown as to which groups of people, if any, benefit from taking antioxidant supplements. However, it is becoming widely known that antioxidants are crucial in cancer and heart disease prevention.

Corn Syrup

by YoliFan

By now you have all probably seen or heard the commercials saying that High Fructose Corn Syrup (or HFCS) is safe because it is made from corn, or that it has the same effects as regular sugar. Despite what the corn industry or anyone else wants us to believe, it is NOT the same as regular sugar. In fact, HFCS is much worse than regular white sugar. HFCS is any type of corn syrup that has been processed to make the glucose into fructose. The food industry has started using HFCS in a wide variety of foods and drinks from crackers and salad dressing to sodas and juice boxes due to the fact that it is so inexpensive to make. Because HFCS is high in fructose and your body requires glucose, your body needs more, so you develop a craving for more sweets.

When glucose is consumed in the body, it increases the production of insulin which allows sugar to go to the cells to be used as energy. It also helps manage the hormones that regulate appetite and food intake. Fructose, however can induce insulin resistance which leads to diabetes, impair glucose tolerance, convert into triglycerides that leads to heart disease, and alter the magnesium balance in the body that can lead to the acceleration of bone loss.

Many experts are now linking the obesity outbreak to HFCS as well. Since the introduction of HFCS to the American diet from 1975-1985 the obesity rate has increased at a similar rate to the amount of HFCS used. New studies show that if HFCS id heated as it would be in cooking, it forms a dangerous chemical called hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). This dangerous chemical has been shown to kill honeybees that were fed the heated HFCS. On top of everything else, HFCS often contains mercury which is toxic to the nerves.

Preservatives

by YoliFan

Artificial preservatives are used to keep food fresh by preventing bacterial and fungal growth. While natural preservatives are plentiful, most food products use artificial and synthetic preservatives. These preservatives may claim to be safe, but in reality most of the foods that are high on artificial preservatives are not good for health. Ignorant of the possible side effects and chemicals being used, most of us end up consuming such foods which, in the long run, affects our health adversely. Many products such as fruits, wine and dried fruits and vegetables contain sulphur dioxide and sulphites that prevents them from getting brown. Sulphites can be linked with hyperactivity and is not good for asthmatics. To add flavor and maintain color, nitrates are used. Higher quantities of nitrates can be hazardous. Moreover, infants and children should avoid the intake of nitrates. Infants, in particular, run a greater risk of being affected by nitrate intake. Nitrates can get converted into nitrites during digestion and mix with hemoglobin to form a harder substance that makes it difficult for the blood to carry oxygen. Butylated hydroxyanisole and hydroxytoluene (BHT) are also used as preservatives in many food products. They have carcinogenic characteristics and can even lead to tumors and cancer. Hyperactivity, asthma attack, cholesterol imbalance are other disorders that can happen due to the excess intake of foods using these preservatives. However, BHT has been banned in several countries.

Water Bottles BPA

by YoliFan

Bisphenol or BPA is a synthetic estrogen that is used to harden polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resin, both of these materials are commonly found in sports bottles. In 2007 it was discovered that an estimated six billion pounds of this product were sold worldwide. So why is BPA so bad? According to the Environmental Working Group: In laboratory tests, trace BPA exposure has been shown to disrupt the endocrine system and trigger a wide variety of disorders, including chromosomal and reproductive system abnormalities, impaired brain and neurological functions, cancer, cardiovascular system damage, adult-onset diabetes, early puberty, obesity and resistance to chemotherapy It’s because of this alarming finding that distributors must offer a wide variety of “BPA Free” products. Despite lab findings, BPA products are still widely used because BPA breaks down “readily” according to the Environmental Working Group and can be almost completely cleaned from products when heated or washed with detergent. It’s because of this that the Food and Drug Administration approved BPA products. According to FDA an adequate amount of safety exists for BPA. at current levels of exposure from food contact uses, for infants and adults. The contradiction between the FDA and many opposing scientific analysts has made BPA products extremely controversial. Many prefer to err on the side of caution by avoiding BPA products. It’s the responsibility of distributors and retailers to educate customers about product material so they can make informed decisions on using them. That’s why companies must displays BPA product information labeled BPA or BPA Free. Look for these products whenever shopping for sports bottles that may contain polycarbonate materials.
