Probiotics and Body Fat

by YoliFan

While it is true that there is no substitute for experience, the Golden Rule of medicine is that nothing can be considered standard until clinical studies have been performed and repeated. This is especially true when it comes to alternative medicine or traditional Chinese medicine, because opponents of these medicinal practices argue that there is no clinical evidence to support the fact that millions of individuals around the world have been successfully using traditional forms of medicine for thousands of years. And something that should be taken into account is the anecdotal evidence spread out over several thousand years. This should be considered equally as important as clinical studies.

In any case, a recent alternative theory arising out of the University of Turku in Finland is showing yet another reason to take the super product known as probiotics. Long considered one of the most healthy types of live microorganisms living in the body, inhibiting pathogens and toxins produced in bacteria as well as improving the balance of intestinal flora, probiotics have been touted as one of those wonder elements that every individual should take, and the most recent study from Finland is showing that probiotics can actually help pregnant women lose belly fat more quickly after giving birth than women who do not take probiotics.

The cases specifically looked at 256 expectant women and found that the women who took probiotics during the first trimester of pregnancy had reduced body fat a year after giving birth in comparison to the women who did not take probiotics. They were divided into three groups, with the first group receiving dietary counseling, low-fat foods, and probiotics. The second group received counseling, food, as well as a placebo, and the third group received only the placebo. 12 months after giving birth, all the women were measured for waist circumference and level of body fat, and what the research showed was the women who took probiotics had a 25% central obesity rate in comparison to the women who did not take probiotics, who had a 43% central obesity rate. The pure placebo group had 40%.

Preservatives

by YoliFan

Food preservatives are chemicals that are added to eatables for a variety of purposes. For instance, they prolong the freshness of the items and enhance their texture.

Role Of Preservatives

The main functions of these substances are outlined below:

1. They help in protecting edibles against environmental decay and pests. The added substances assist to inhibit the food from rotting by killing the microorganisms responsible for such phenomenon.

2. They give a unique appearance to dishes and eatables. Moreover, they help in improving the texture and look of items.

3. They help maintain the original taste of the dish. In absence of food additives preservatives, the eatables rot and lose their flavor. Hence, they are not only used for retaining natural taste but also for enhancing flavor.

The commonly used preservatives are:

1. Sodium Benzoate

2. Benzoic Acid

3. Sulfur Dioxide

4. Sodium Nitrite

Preservation has been in use since ages. It all began, when man started storing things that were non-perishable. Pickling is a simple example of this art, which was done by adding vinegar to the dishes. This practice continues to this date. However, with the advancement of science new preservation techniques have been developed that ensure long life of eatables and liquids. The most common methods are boiling, freezing, pasteurizing, drying, vacuum packing, irradiation, pickling and use of chemical substances. The method of food additives preservatives is better than traditional methods as it is economical, quick and more efficient.

Reusable Bottles

by YoliFan

How do you decide which type of reusable bottle you should use? The advantages and disadvantages of seven types of plastic, aluminum, stainless steel bottles will be compared to help you make an informed choice. Features related to health, performance, environmental impact, and cost will be evaluated. Environmental impact will be assessed by considering the durability of the bottles and whether they are recyclable. The resin code (type of plastic) is identifiable by the number within the triangular symbol on the bottoms of plastic bottles.

Plastic #1

Most disposable water bottles are made of plastic #1 or PET. Some people try to reduce their plastic waste by washing them out and reusing them, but bottles made out of plastic #1 are not reusable. A Canadian study found that 13% of the water bottles tested in an elementary school had bacterial levels (9% were found to have fecal coliforms) exceeding drinking water quality guidelines by the end of the school day. Bottles made of plastic #1 are not durable enough to withstand use, cleaning, and reuse without losing their integrity. The compelling issue with these bottles is not whether they leach unwanted chemicals into the water, but that bacteria cannot be easily washed out of them. Long storage time on the shelf or in a warm garage or trunk does increase the likelihood of bacterial growth and may cause antimony to leach from the plastic. Contrary to urban legend, freezing bottled water does not increase the likelihood of leaching. These bottles are recyclable everywhere, and they should be recycled after a single use.

Plastic #3, #6, and #7

There are numerous reports that plastics #3, #6, and #7 leach unhealthful substances into drinks. Plastic #3 (PVC) leaches phthalates which have been shown to cause developmental and reproductive damage. Plastic #6 (polystyrene) leaches styrene which can cause nervous system effects and liver damage. Polycarbonate, one type of plastic #7 (other assorted types) from which the clear, brightly colored bottles are sometimes made, has been shown to leach Bisphenol A (PBA), a hormone disruptor that mimics estrogen. Plastic #7 (polycarbonate only) is controversial. Two groups of technical experts studied it and came to differing conclusions. They agreed that BPA leaches into drinks at low levels, but one group said the levels were too low to cause any concern, and one group said that the levels were significant to human health. Polycarbonate has been banned by the Canadian government and is being re-reviewed by the USEPA. There is a new type of plastic #7 that is BPA-free; whether it leaches other substances, not currently known to be hazardous, is yet to be seen. None of these three types of plastic is widely recyclable. Plastic #7 is durable, but like most plastic, will wear more quickly if exposed to heat in the dishwasher. Bottles made from plastic #7 cost between $8 and $12.

Plastics #2, #4, and #5

Plastics #2, #4, and #5 are the healthiest plastic bottle options since they are not known to leach. These plastic bottles do retain odors and stains and after repeated use, tend to leak if not held upright. This lack of durability makes them a poor choice for long term use, and they will not hold up well in the dishwasher. Plastic #2 is commonly recyclable, but plastics #4 and 5 are not recyclable in many municipalities. Bottles made of these plastics are inexpensive, ranging from $5 to $10.

Probiotics

by YoliFan

What Are Probiotics?

One widely used definition, developed by the World Health Organization and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, is that probiotics are “live microorganisms, which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host.”

Your intestinal tract contains over 100 trillion bacteria-both good and bad. The friendly or healthy bacteria are vital to proper development of the immune system. These tiny organisms help restore health and balance to the intestinal tract which are beneficial to:

1. protect against microorganisms that could cause disease

2. to aid in the digestion and absorption of food and nutrients

Creating and maintaining a healthy balance of beneficial bacteria can best be achieved by using probiotics. Most often, the bacteria come from two groups, Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium. Within each group, there are different species (for example, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidus), and within each species, different strains (or varieties). A few common probiotics, such as Saccharomyces boulardii, are yeasts, which are different from bacteria.

Healthy Bacteria Can Help Strengthen Your Overall Health

The good bacteria live, colonize, thrive, and reproduce in your gastrointestinal tract, beginning just below the stomach, and form a complex and enormously diverse ecosystem. These resident bacteria synthesize the B-complex vitamins, crowd out yeast and parasites, help regulate blood cholesterol levels, and produce antibiotic compounds.

Each person’s mix of bacteria varies. Interactions between a person and the microorganisms in his body, and among the microorganisms themselves, can be crucial to the person’s health and well-being. When the bacteria in your gut are abundant and healthy, they promote good health, prevent illness, and protect your well-being. Their health is literally your health. Maintaining a healthy intestinal tract is essential because your GI tract contains 80% of the cells that make immune antibodies.

Aspartame

by YoliFan

Is aspartame good or bad? Pretty straightforward question in my inbox this morning. Well, aspartame is absolutely appalling! Many people I have known at least say the same thing. You could type it into a search engine and read all the scary information. All artificial sweeteners contain wood alcohol and other chemicals. My friend’s daughter always a had fairly time with her menstruation; but in the past year it began to be terrible. Finally she bled for 6 weeks without stopping and had terrible cramps and miseries. She told her to quit aspartame totally. The daughter did and it all went away. She is back to normal for her. My own experience with aspartame has been one of illness. I can’t touch the stuff. I get migraines if I even chew gum with aspartame in it. I realize that the FDA has approved it, and that it is a billion dollar industry. It makes me wonder, however, how interested the FDA truly is in the public well being, when it approves such poison for our consumption, and blatantly refuses to acknowledge such sweeteners as Stevia which is an herb that has been used for centuries, that which even diabetics can use safely.
