Water Bottles BPA

by YoliFan

Bisphenol or BPA is a synthetic estrogen that is used to harden polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resin, both of these materials are commonly found in sports bottles. In 2007 it was discovered that an estimated six billion pounds of this product were sold worldwide. So why is BPA so bad? According to the Environmental Working Group:

“In laboratory tests, trace BPA exposure has been shown to disrupt the endocrine system and trigger a wide variety of disorders, including chromosomal and reproductive system abnormalities, impaired brain and neurological functions, cancer, cardiovascular system damage, adult-onset diabetes, early puberty, obesity and resistance to chemotherapy”.

It’s because of this alarming finding that distributors must offer a wide variety of “BPA Free” products. Despite lab findings, BPA products are still widely used because BPA breaks down “readily” according to the Environmental Working Group and can be almost completely cleaned from products when heated or washed with detergent. It’s because of this that the Food and Drug Administration approved BPA products. According to FDA “an adequate amount of safety exists for BPA. at current levels of exposure from food contact uses, for infants and adults”.

The contradiction between the FDA and many opposing scientific analysts has made BPA products extremely controversial. Many prefer to err on the side of caution by avoiding BPA products. It’s the responsibility of distributors and retailers to educate customers about product material so they can make informed decisions on using them. That’s why companies must displays BPA product information labeled BPA or BPA Free. Look for these products whenever shopping for sports bottles that may contain polycarbonate materials.

Safe Water Bottles

by YoliFan

So what’s all this talk about unsafe water bottles? You may have caught wind of some of the controversy surrounding polycarbonate plastic water bottles and the chemicals used in their manufacture. You may have heard the term “BPA” or “Bisphenol-A,” but educating yourself about this harmful chemical and choosing safe water bottles probably seemed like a chore, not the way you want to spend a Monday night or Saturday afternoon. This article contains all the information you need to know to make informed decisions about safe water bottles that are both recyclable and suitable for multiple uses. What is BPA anyway?

BPA was first discovered in 1891, and manufacturers have used this monomer for at least fifty years. It is a key ingredient used in the epoxy resins that go into making the nearly shatter-proof polycarbonate plastic water bottles, which have become so popular with fitness and outdoors enthusiasts. Even though BPA has long been suspected of having adverse effects on the human body-since the 1930s!-concerns over its use in many common household products didn’t make a splash in mainstream media until 2008.

If you’ve had that Nalgene bottle for more than a couple of years, it probably contains BPA, and more disturbing is the thought that most baby bottles more than a couple years old do too. Factors like regular exposure to heat can cause the plastic to degrade at a faster rate and speed up the release of BPA into water and other stored liquids.

Simply put, feeding infants with plastic formula bottles exposes them to BPA’s harmful effects. But, before you panic, keep in mind that the six top manufacturers of baby bottles in the U.S. have all pledged to stop using BPA. Safe water bottles and safe formula bottles are now widely available.

The chemical has low toxicity, meaning that it’s not going to hurt you overnight, yet keep in mind that repeated ingestion of Bisphenol-A can develop into chronic toxicity over the long-term, mimicking human hormones like estrogen and potentially causing prostate, testicular, and breast cancer.

Probiotics

by YoliFan

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) refers to a wide variety of symptoms that affect thousands of Americans. IBS causes a range of gastrointestinal issues including cramping, diarrhea, constipation, bloating, and abdominal pain. IBS is difficult to diagnose, as symptoms tend to be subjective and vary from patient to patient, and there is currently no consistently effective treatment, though there are several prescription medications available targeted to IBS sufferers. Many experts believe that IBS is triggered by stress. Patients have also reported symptoms that linger following a bacterial gastrointestinal infection. Certain foods can also exacerbate the condition, especially foods containing gluten and lactose. Other suspected dietary triggers include artificial sweeteners, overeating, excessive fat consumption, and eating too quickly. Some prescription medications – chiefly antibiotics and certain anti-depressants – can also disrupt the balance of beneficial bacteria in the gut and may bring about IBS symptoms.

Drinking Water Containers

by YoliFan

Looking for drinking water containers? A drinking water container might seem like a simple thing, with little cause for concern or caution. It might seem like just a matter of “taste”. But, there are some facts that you should know.I’m going to assume that you have a good home purification system that removes contaminants such as lead, chlorine, THMs, VOCs, cysts, herbicides, pesticides, medications and other traces that are unsafe and unhealthy for consumption. So, you have the purest water that there is.You even have a shower head filter, because you know that chemical contaminants can be absorbed through the skin. But, when you go to buy drinking water containers, you might just be looking for a nice color, something that matches your jogging outfit. You should be more concerned about what materials are used to make your new drinking water container. For many reasons, glass is the best material for drinking water containers. But, in some cases, like for hiking or jogging, it is just more practical to have plastic or polycarbonate. Drop a glass drinking water container down a mountainside and not only will you have no fresh water, but you’ll end up polluting the hillside with shattered glass. So, when you are shopping for unbreakable drinking water containers, be sure to look for a label that says “BPA-Free.”

As a liquid sits in a drinking water container, compounds used to make that container seep into the liquid. That’s why there is a different “taste” to waters stored in plastic. If it’s flavored, then you may not recognize the taste, but the compounds are in there, just the same. The chemical composition of glass is different. Plastics break down over time, particularly with repeated washings. Glass will pretty much last forever. You can actually “see” this happening as you reuse plastic drinking water containers. The outer surface becomes less smooth. The same thing is going on inside the bottle. The heat from the dishwasher and caustic dish washing detergents cause further breakdown of the polymers, so if you typically use a drinking water container for a long period of time, there will be some chemicals absorption any time your purified water is put into the drinking water container.
