Caffeine

by YoliFan

In a regular cup of coffee there are about 170 mg of caffeine and in decaffeinated coffee there are about 30/40 mg of caffeine. On the stock market, Coffee is a 90 billion dollar industry but what is significant is that just in North America 85%+ drink 3 to 5 cups of coffee per day. A huge number of people are at risk for many of the issues surrounding coffee consumption.
-Cardiovascular Problems
Caffeine increases your heart rate, elevates your blood pressure, and can contribute to the development of heart disease. Both decaf and regular coffee increase your cholesterol and homocysteine, the biochemical that science has linked to increased risk for heart attack. Caffeine is also linked to coronary vasospasms, the cause for 20% of all fatal heart attacks which kill otherwise perfectly healthy people. Stress Caffeine stimulates the excretion of stress hormones which can produce increased levels of anxiety, irritability, muscular tension and pain, indigestion, insomnia, and decreased immunity. Increased levels of stress from caffeine can keep you from being able to make healthy responses to the normal daily stress everyone is subjected to in their lives.
-Emotional Disturbances
Anxiety and irritability are hallmark mood disturbances associated with caffeine consumption, but equally important is depression and attention disorders. Depression may occur as part of the let down after the stimulant effects of caffeine wears off. It may also appear during the recovery period after quitting caffeine while the brain’s chemistry is readjusted. Caffeine rather than increasing mental activity actually decreases blood flow to the brain by as much as 30% and negatively effects memory and mental performance.
-Blood Sugar Swings
Diabetics and hypoglycemics should avoid caffeine because it stimulates a temporary surge in blood sugar which is then followed by an overproduction of insulin that causes a blood sugar crash within hours. If you’re trying to loose weight, this rollercoaster will actually cause weight gain since insulin’s message to the body is to store excess sugar as fat.

Artificial Preservatives

by YoliFan

Artificial preservatives are used to keep food fresh by preventing bacterial and fungal growth. While natural preservatives are plentiful, most food products use artificial and synthetic preservatives. These preservatives may claim to be safe, but in reality most of the foods that are high on artificial preservatives are not good for health. Ignorant of the possible side effects and chemicals being used, most of us end up consuming such foods which, in the long run, affects our health adversely. Many products such as fruits, wine and dried fruits and vegetables contain sulphur dioxide and sulphites that prevents them from getting brown. Sulphites can be linked with hyperactivity and is not good for asthmatics. To add flavor and maintain color, nitrates are used. Higher quantities of nitrates can be hazardous. Moreover, infants and children should avoid the intake of nitrates. Infants, in particular, run a greater risk of being affected by nitrate intake. Nitrates can get converted into nitrites during digestion and mix with hemoglobin to form a harder substance that makes it difficult for the blood to carry oxygen. Butylated hydroxyanisole and hydroxytoluene (BHT) are also used as preservatives in many food products. They have carcinogenic characteristics and can even lead to tumors and cancer. Hyperactivity, asthma attack, cholesterol imbalance are other disorders that can happen due to the excess intake of foods using these preservatives. However, BHT has been banned in several countries.

Dangers of the Plastic Water Bottle

by YoliFan

You may not know for 20 years if your plastic water bottle is poisoning you.Right now the FDA says only that it will keep monitoring data to see if the agency needs to take regulatory action. It could be 20 or 30 years before they truly know the effects on the human body from the toxins leached from plastic water bottles. For now no serious action is being taken regarding the very serious health hazards presented by plastic water bottles, plastic food storage containers, and more. Here’s why your plastic water bottle may be unsafe: Most bottled water comes in polyethylene terephthalate bottles, indicated by a number 1, PET, or PETE on the bottle’s bottom. While some scientists believe that these bottles are generally safe at room temperature, when they are stored at warm temperatures, the story changes. When the bottles are warmed, they begin to quickly leach chemicals into the water. It doesn’t matter if the bottles are still sealed, of it it’s the bottle you’re carrying with you and drinking from throughout the day. Scientists agree that the bottle left in the hot car all day is dangerous – but how warm is too warm? And how warm were those bottles during shipment? How warm were they when they sat in a warehouse prior to shipment? You have no way to know.According to Ken Smith, PhD and past chair of the American Chemical Society’s division of environmental chemistry, “Leaving bottled water out in the car changes the chemical equilibrium so that the materials from the plastic go into the water faster.”Note that he didn’t say heat causes chemicals to go into the water, but that it causes them to go into the water faster. That would indicate that even if your bottled water has been refrigerated from the day it was bottled, chemicals are leaching into it.

Healthy Water Bottles

by YoliFan

Bisphenol-A (BPA) is an organic compound found in polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resin. It is a rather tough compound and is extensively used in most plastic products such as plastic baby bottles, pacifiers, food containers etc.So what exactly is the problem with BPA one might ask? The answer is quite astounding. The major concerns with BPA are the transfer of it through leaching from the plastic bottles, and food containers into our foods and beverage. Canned products are also dangerous as the lining of these tins and cans contains the epoxy resin that has BPA in it. It is a toxic compound and when ingested by humans can cause very many problems.Numerous studies carried out by various research groups have pointed out that exposure to even trace amounts of BPA, which acts as a synthetic hormone, have shown to cause problems of the endocrine system and cause several disorders such as heart damage, impaired brain and neurological functions, cancer etc. Risks also include reproductive abnormalities and immune problems. The best way to tackle this issue is to be informed. Information is power. Carry out a well rounded research into the various products available in the markets. Many major plastic manufacturers are now displaying a logo which says “BPA- free. It is useful to know that plastics are categorized with a number from 1 to 7. Plastics marked with the number 7 and a “PC” is made of polycarbonate and contains BPA.

Choosing the Best Eco-Friendly Water Bottle

by YoliFan

By now you have probably heard the warnings about products containing BPA plastic, but did you know many stainless steel bottles still contain the substance in their lids? Doesn’t make much sense, does it? Well, if you are considering buying a container to carry around a fresh supply of healthy water, you may as well get the best one. So here are five things that you should look for in a stainless steel water bottle.

1. Totally BPA-Free
Unlike the overwhelming majority of stainless steel container on the market, there a select few that are completely free of BPA. Look for a durable bottle that has absolutely no chemical liner. Where other bottles fail the BPA-free criteria is that the underside of the lid is made of BPA. BPA (Bisphenol A) has been in the news because of health concerns that link it with infant brain and fetal development and behavior. More and more studies are also showing a possible link to thyroid complications, cancers and other serious health problems.

2. Green
Not only is a stainless steel water bottle a great choice for your health, but it is a great decision if you want to create a more eco-friendly and green habit. Having a safe drinking container to carry around fresh filtered water is a habit that will make you feel good about the health of your family, future generations and the planet. If you don’t already filter your water, check into an affordable multi-stage counter top water filter system to go with your new water bottle. Both products will give you peace of mind because you will be far healthier and will be doing your part to prevent the ridiculous and unnecessary amounts of plastic bottles that sit in landfills and pollute the Earth.

3. Cost
Reusable stainless steel water bottles can be purchased at an extremely affordable price. Plus, the container will likely likely pay for itself a few days, since you won’t need to buy water bottles. By filtering your water at home, you’ll really be cutting down on plastic bottle consumption. Considering its not uncommon for a family to spend over a $100 on bottled water drinks in a month, buying a stainless steel bottle or canteen along with a multi-stage water filter, is not just a “green” decision, but a financially smart one too.

Reusable Bottles

by YoliFan

How do you decide which type of reusable bottle you should use? The advantages and disadvantages of seven types of plastic, aluminum, stainless steel bottles will be compared to help you make an informed choice. Features related to health, performance, environmental impact, and cost will be evaluated. Environmental impact will be assessed by considering the durability of the bottles and whether they are recyclable. The resin code (type of plastic) is identifiable by the number within the triangular symbol on the bottoms of plastic bottles. Most disposable water bottles are made of plastic #1 or PET. Some people try to reduce their plastic waste by washing them out and reusing them, but bottles made out of plastic #1 are not reusable. Bottles made of plastic #1 are not durable enough to withstand use, cleaning, and reuse without losing their integrity. The compelling issue with these bottles is not whether they leach unwanted chemicals into the water, but that bacteria cannot be easily washed out of them. Long storage time on the shelf or in a warm garage or trunk does increase the likelihood of bacterial growth and may cause antimony to leach from the plastic. Contrary to urban legend, freezing bottled water does not increase the likelihood of leaching. These bottles are recyclable everywhere, and they should be recycled after a single use.

There are numerous reports that plastics. Plastic #3 (PVC) leaches phthalates which have been shown to cause developmental and reproductive damage. Plastic #6 (polystyrene) leaches styrene which can cause nervous system effects and liver damage. Polycarbonate, one type of plastic #7 (other assorted types) from which the clear, brightly colored bottles are sometimes made, has been shown to leach Bisphenol A (PBA), a hormone disruptor that mimics estrogen. Plastic #7 (polycarbonate only) is controversial. Two groups of technical experts studied it and came to differing conclusions. They agreed that BPA leaches into drinks at low levels, but one group said the levels were too low to cause any concern, and one group said that the levels were significant to human health. Polycarbonate has been banned by the Canadian government and is being re-reviewed by the USEPA. There is a new type of plastic #7 that is BPA-free; whether it leaches other substances, not currently known to be hazardous, is yet to be seen. None of these three types of plastic is widely recyclable. Plastic #7 is durable, but like most plastic, will wear more quickly if exposed to heat in the dishwasher. Bottles made from plastic #7 cost between $8 and $12.

Safe Water Bottles

by YoliFan

So what’s all this talk about unsafe water bottles? You may have caught wind of some of the controversy surrounding polycarbonate plastic water bottles and the chemicals used in their manufacture. You may have heard the term “BPA” or “Bisphenol-A,” but educating yourself about this harmful chemical and choosing safe water bottles probably seemed like a chore, not the way you want to spend a Monday night or Saturday afternoon. This article contains all the information you need to know to make informed decisions about safe water bottles that are both recyclable and suitable for multiple uses. What is BPA anyway?

BPA was first discovered in 1891, and manufacturers have used this monomer for at least fifty years. It is a key ingredient used in the epoxy resins that go into making the nearly shatter-proof polycarbonate plastic water bottles, which have become so popular with fitness and outdoors enthusiasts. Even though BPA has long been suspected of having adverse effects on the human body-since the 1930s!-concerns over its use in many common household products didn’t make a splash in mainstream media until 2008.

If you’ve had that Nalgene bottle for more than a couple of years, it probably contains BPA, and more disturbing is the thought that most baby bottles more than a couple years old do too. Factors like regular exposure to heat can cause the plastic to degrade at a faster rate and speed up the release of BPA into water and other stored liquids.

Simply put, feeding infants with plastic formula bottles exposes them to BPA’s harmful effects. But, before you panic, keep in mind that the six top manufacturers of baby bottles in the U.S. have all pledged to stop using BPA. Safe water bottles and safe formula bottles are now widely available.

The chemical has low toxicity, meaning that it’s not going to hurt you overnight, yet keep in mind that repeated ingestion of Bisphenol-A can develop into chronic toxicity over the long-term, mimicking human hormones like estrogen and potentially causing prostate, testicular, and breast cancer.

Water Bottles BPA

by YoliFan

Bisphenol or BPA is a synthetic estrogen that is used to harden polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resin, both of these materials are commonly found in sports bottles. In 2007 it was discovered that an estimated six billion pounds of this product were sold worldwide. So why is BPA so bad? According to the Environmental Working Group:

“In laboratory tests, trace BPA exposure has been shown to disrupt the endocrine system and trigger a wide variety of disorders, including chromosomal and reproductive system abnormalities, impaired brain and neurological functions, cancer, cardiovascular system damage, adult-onset diabetes, early puberty, obesity and resistance to chemotherapy”.

It’s because of this alarming finding that distributors must offer a wide variety of “BPA Free” products. Despite lab findings, BPA products are still widely used because BPA breaks down “readily” according to the Environmental Working Group and can be almost completely cleaned from products when heated or washed with detergent. It’s because of this that the Food and Drug Administration approved BPA products. According to FDA “an adequate amount of safety exists for BPA. at current levels of exposure from food contact uses, for infants and adults”.

The contradiction between the FDA and many opposing scientific analysts has made BPA products extremely controversial. Many prefer to err on the side of caution by avoiding BPA products. It’s the responsibility of distributors and retailers to educate customers about product material so they can make informed decisions on using them. That’s why companies must displays BPA product information labeled BPA or BPA Free. Look for these products whenever shopping for sports bottles that may contain polycarbonate materials.
