Why Are Antioxidants So Important?

by YoliFan

In recent years, you may have heard a thing or two about antioxidants. In fact, there are a lot of people who are on the antioxidant kick, so to speak, because they believe that this is the end-all be-all of the health world. In other words, all you have to do is buy foods or beverages with a lot of antioxidants in it, and you’ll automatically be healthier. Well, it is not that easy. Antioxidants can be found in a variety of foods and beverages.

For example, perhaps one of the most popular examples right now is green tea. People are going crazy over green tea because supposedly green tea contains a plethora of antioxidants that are good for your body and blood stream. Antioxidants are important because they serve as a type of defense mechanism for your body. Antioxidants in your body work doubly hard to fight off infections as well as prevent infections from ever starting. Think of it like having a little military inside of your body that is working for you 24 hours a day; seven days a week. However, while antioxidants are great for you, like too much of any good thing, they can work against you if you consume too much.

You may have heard a lot of talk recently about the antioxidants and the importance of vitamins and foods that contain them. But what exactly are antioxidants? Why are they so important? And how can taking them improve your health? When your body begins to break down food the chemical process can create free radicals in the body. This can also occur due to exposure to dangerous environmental influences such as radiation and tobacco. The damage done to your body by the presence of free radicals can lead to various types of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and other serious health problems. Antioxidants serve as a type of defense force against free radicals, working through the body to collect the free radicals that were created by the oxidation process in your body and to repair the damage that they have caused.

Corn Syrup

by YoliFan

Fructose is a simple sugar that is found naturally in most fruits and vegetables. The amount of naturally occurring fructose found in whole foods is small, and because there is evidence showing that small amounts do not raise blood sugar levels significantly, it has long been considered a good sugar and a healthy substitute for refined sugar. Enter high fructose corn syrup. Since its introduction, the amount of HFCS consumed on a daily basis has skyrocketed, and with that, so has the fructose debate.Ultimately, the debate boils down to a single simple question: Is fructose good for you? Because the main source in the modern diet now comes from corn syrup, this product tends to be at the center of most debates. High fructose corn syrup is a highly processed sugar that consists of both glucose and fructose. However, the amount of fructose in a single gram of corn syrup exceeds the amount found naturally in fresh fruits and vegetables. For some, the issue is centered around processing. The argument is that because corn syrup does not exist in nature, it cannot be called a natural product, and therefore is not to be considered healthy. To support this argument, studies reveal that the process by which corn is turned into HFCS requires mercury. This process has led to trace amounts of mercury being found in HFCS, substantiating the claim that it is not a healthy sweetener. In addition, it is argued that high fructose consumption leads to high density belly fat which has been linked to many health and medical issues.

Probiotic The Friendly Bacteria

by YoliFan

The World Health Organization defines probiotics as live micro-organisms that confer a health benefit on the host, when administered in adequate amounts.Probiotics are basically microorganism such as bacteria, viruses and yeast that are similar to beneficial microorganisms found in the human gut.Mostly probiotics consist of bacteria, hence the moniker ‘friendly bacteria’ or ‘good bacteria’. These friendly bacteria are vital to proper development of the immune system, to protection against the harmful microorganisms that cause disease. Probiotics can be found in natural foods as well as supplements.

The Need for Probiotics

Our bodies are host to both good and bad microorganisms numbering in the trillions, but this is a delicate balance. This balance is crucial for our health but is too often disturbed due to our poor habits and modern medicine. One reason is that ‘unfriendly’ microorganisms such as: disease-causing bacteria, yeasts, fungi, and parasites increase and upset the balance. These microorganisms flourish due to lack of hygiene and massive amounts of junk foods that we consume. The other reason is because of antibiotics, these antibiotics are definitely useful – but repeated use of antibiotics kills the friendly bacteria, subsequently disrupting the balance.

Bisphenol A

by YoliFan

Many people in the world buy bottled water that is packaged in a plastic bottle. Also, many of us have reused that plastic bottle over and over again whether we take it with us on trips, keep it next to our bed, leave the bottles in the trunk of our cars, or worst, sending it with our children to their school to drink water on a daily basis.Plastic contains dangerous chemicals including Bisphenol A (BPA) which over time or exposed to sunlight will be leach into the water causing harm to our health or to the health of our loved ones.

What Is Bisphenol A (BPA)?

Bisphenol A (BPA) is harsh chemical used in plastics for various household goods including baby bottles, water or soda bottles, plastic food storage containers and bags, glasses, plastic tableware, electronic equipment, DVDs, CDs, medical devices and plastics used to line the inner layer of cups, cans and even some “safe bottles”.

Bisphenol A is the primary building block used to make plastics in our household items. Bisphenol A became a popular subject in early 2006 when it made headlines of its danger as well as its common exposure to our plastics used at home. Since then, the chemical, Bisphenol A, has been studied very closely and has been the subject of intense research. The results of the research are worrying and make a connection of various health problems to the exposure of Bisphenol A (BPA).Scientists found that exposure to Bisphenol A can cause pre-cancerous conditions, behavioral abnormalities, early puberty, reproductive abnormalities and obesity. Research is still finding other issues that the public has not been made aware of yet.

Picking a Safe Water Bottle

by YoliFan

We rarely think about the water bottles we purchase at our local convenience store or gas station. But the truth is that many of these are not safe water bottles. They can leak chemicals or serve as breeding grounds for bacteria. They can clog our landfills and harm the environment. It’s a sad fact that many water bottles that we commonly use are not safe water bottles. They can prove to be harmful to ourselves and to our families.

The bad news is that some of the most common water bottles also rank as the least safe. For instance, there is the common disposable plastic water bottle. You’ve certainly seen these bottles on the shelves of your local grocery stores or gas stations. Most well-known brands come in them. Unfortunately, these are not safe bottles. These bottles are far from safe water bottles. They can leak dangerous chemicals if they are used repeatedly. They can also serve as a comfortable home for bacteria that like to grow from their cracks and crevices. Finally, they are horrible for the environment. Our country’s landfills are stuffed with these disposable plastic bottles. All of these factors combine to make sure that no one would ever mistake these as safe water bottles.

You don’t have to rely on disposable plastic bottles, though. There are many alternatives for you if you’re interested in finding a safe water bottle for yourself and your family members. One option, for instance, is a non-disposable bottle made out of a more durable, tougher plastic. If you’ve seen these in stores, you know that they are far more rigid than their disposable counterparts. Unfortunately, these bottles have one trait that prevents them from ranking as a safe water bottle.

Greener Water Bottles

by YoliFan

We all know that drinking bottled water leads to the creation of vast amounts of waste. Americans alone are adding 30 million PET water bottles to landfills every single day! Much of the plastic that results from recycling pet bottles ends up going unused. Even the manufacturing and transportation of the bottles takes a toll in the form of millions of barrels of fossil fuels being consumed. Fact is, using a reusable water bottle is good for the environment. But all reusable bottles are not created equally. So what are the choices? Plastic Bottles. There are many kinds of plastics used in water bottles, and there is a lively debate on which ones are safe and which ones can leach harmful toxins. For the sake of this article I am going to leave plastic off the list for the simple reason that I don’t like the taste of water that has been sitting in a plastic bottle for over a day. I like my water to taste like water. Glass Bottles. Glass is a great choice for taste and it is environmentally friendly. Unfortunately glass is impractical as a portable water bottle so I will leave it off as well.

Antioxidants

by YoliFan

Acai is a special type of fruit that grows predominantly in the Amazon jungle especially in the acai palm trees. It grows always in bunches. The fruit is usually smaller in size and it is purple in color. Acai berry antioxidants prepared from acai berry fruit is of prime importance. The importance of acai berry fruit was discovered by the outside world rather than by the people in Amazon. This fruit gets perished easily in a shorter time from the period of harvesting and so it has to be converted into some other solid or powder form before it is being transported. The acai berry fruit has a large seed in the middle surrounded by outer pulp region. When the acai berry is processed, the first step is to get the seed out and the remaining flesh of the fruit is converted into a puree. The puree is a form which retains all the nutritional benefits that are available in the acai fruit. But the manufacturers will not give the juice in its purified form. They will add water or sometimes mix with other juices before it is converted into finished juice. So the finished juice contains only 10 to 20% pure acai which is enough for us.

Research on acai berry fruit has found out that the fruit has the highest antioxidant activity. This prevents some of the diseases associated with heart. Also it serves as a good capsule for curing cancer. Acai contains flavonoids and anthocyanins. The purple color of acai fruit is because o f the presence of anthocyanins. They serve as powerful antioxidant agents. Generally the role of antioxidants is to destroy the power of the free radicals and thereby protect our body from severe diseases. Eating food with less antioxidant level is of no use. We have to eat food and fruits rich in antioxidant level in order to keep ourselves healthy.

Dangers of Carbonated Beverages

by YoliFan

The purpose of this article is not to scare you but to enlighten you, although it may do both. These days the consumption of carbonated beverages (such as soft drinks), especially among our youth, is quite disconcerting when you consider that these beverages are toxic to the human body. The following is a list of some of these toxic compounds: sugar, carbonation, aspartame, food dyes and phosphoric acid.

SUGAR

In 1900, the average consumption of sugar was approximately ½ lb/person/year. Currently, we roughly consume an appalling 180 lbs/person/year! The results on the body speak for themselves. Furthermore, the average soft drink has 10 tsp of sugar per can. No wonder pop is so addictive for so many people.

CARBONATION

Carbonation is created by pumping carbon dioxide into water or other liquid. You may recall that carbon dioxide is a waste product of cellular and food metabolism, as such the body wants to expel it. So why would anyone want to further add a waste product to their body? Carbonated beverages also burden the body by weakening stomach acid, thereby interfering with proper digestion.

ASPARTAME

“Aha! But I only drink diet sodas!” you say. Unfortunately, eventhough diet sodas have less sugar than regular soda they contain another concern – aspartame. Aspartame is a low calorie artificial sweetener that has the effect of lowering your body’s metabolism. As a result, a 400 calorie meal now becomes an 800 calorie meal! Aspartame has also been linked to convulsions, depression, insomnia, irritability, weakness, dizziness, migraines, and mood changes.

FOOD DYES

Many carbonated beverages contain food dyes that are unfit for human consumption. Many of these artificial colourings have been connected to ailments such Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) and, according to Dr. Walker’s book Water Can Undermine Your Health, more than a million children today are afflicted with cerebral lesions caused by soft drinks!

PHOSPHORIC ACID

This is the substance that causes the soft drink to bubble and fizz. Being an acid, phosphoric acid burns your insides but more importantly upsets your body’s delicate phosphorus-calcium balance. You may recall that calcium can be released from the bones to restore proper pH balance in the blood. As a result, the presence of phosphoric acid can lead to the weakening of the skeletal structure and hence osteoporosis. In 1994, The Journal of Adolescent Health, reported a “strong association between cola beverage consumption and bone fractures in girls.” Numerous studies have confirmed this result.

How Soda Affects Your Health

by YoliFan

We all know that soda is bad for us, but a new study reveals that its effects may be worse than previously thought. Researchers in Singapore have found a link between soda consumption and pancreatic cancer. Participants in the study who drank two or more per week were found to be at higher risk of developing pancreatic cancer, which is one of the deadliest forms.

This news comes as no surprise to health advocates, who have noted the effects of these high-sugar beverages on the body for many years. With more than 60,000 participants, the new study found an 87 percent higher risk of developing pancreatic cancer among those who consumed soft drinks frequently but not among those who drank fruit juice instead. Researchers theorized that the high sugar content found in soda raises the body’s insulin levels, which can lead to the growth of cancer cells in the pancreas. Another possible explanation could result from the difference between the natural sugars found in fruit juices compared to the added sugar (and sometimes sugar substitutes) found in carbonated sodas.

However, researchers also noted a link between drinking soda and engaging in other unhealthy behaviors, such as eating red meat and smoking. Consumption of red meat has been linked to pancreatic cancer in previous studies. Thus, the connection between soda and pancreatic cancer remains somewhat unclear.
